Ebbole,Michael Freitag,Ian T. Paulsen,Matthew S. Sachs,Eric S. Lander,Chad Nusbaum,Bruce W. Birren +77 more
TL;DR: A high-quality draft sequence of the N. crassa genome is reported, suggesting that RIP has had a profound impact on genome evolution, greatly slowing the creation of new genes through genomic duplication and resulting in a genome with an unusually low proportion of closely related genes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genome sequence of the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea
Ralph A. Dean,Nicholas J. Talbot,Daniel J. Ebbole,Mark L. Farman,Thomas K. Mitchell,Marc J. Orbach,Michael R. Thon,Resham Kulkarni,Resham Kulkarni,Jin-Rong Xu,Huaqin Pan,Nick D. Read,Yong-Hwan Lee,Ignazio Carbone,Doug Brown,Yeonyee Oh,Nicole M. Donofrio,Jun Seop Jeong,Darren M. Soanes,Slavica Djonovic,Elena A. Kolomiets,Cathryn J. Rehmeyer,Weixi Li,Michael W. Harding,Soonok Kim,Marc-Henri Lebrun,Heidi U. Böhnert,Sean J. Coughlan,Jonathan Butler,Sarah E. Calvo,Li-Jun Ma,Robert Nicol,Seth Purcell,Chad Nusbaum,James E. Galagan,Bruce W. Birren +35 more
TL;DR: The draft sequence of the M. grisea genome is reported, reflecting the clonal nature of this fungus imposed by widespread rice cultivation and analysis of the gene set provides an insight into the adaptations required by a fungus to cause disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification and characterization of MPG1, a gene involved in pathogenicity from the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea.
TL;DR: The results suggest that hydrophobins may have a role in the elaboration of infective structures by fungi and may fulfill other functions in fungal phytopathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lessons from the Genome Sequence of Neurospora crassa: Tracing the Path from Genomic Blueprint to Multicellular Organism
Katherine A. Borkovich,Lisa A. Alex,Oded Yarden,Michael Freitag,Gloria E. Turner,Nick D. Read,Stephan Seiler,Deborah Bell-Pedersen,John V. Paietta,Nora Plesofsky,Michael Plamann,Marta Goodrich-Tanrikulu,Ulrich Schulte,Gertrud Mannhaupt,Frank E. Nargang,Alan Radford,Claude P. Selitrennikoff,James E. Galagan,Jay C. Dunlap,Jennifer J. Kalkman,Rebecca O’Rourke,Frederick J. Bowring,Jane Yeadon,Chizu Ishii,Keiichiro Suzuki,Wataru Sakai,Robert Pratt +38 more
TL;DR: An analysis of over 1,100 of the ∼10,000 predicted proteins encoded by the genome sequence of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa reveals potential new targets for antifungals as well as loci implicated in human and plant physiology and disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wilkinson,Michael Zhang,Pedro M. Coutinho,Charles M. Kenerley,Enrique Monte,Scott E. Baker,Scott E. Baker,Igor V. Grigoriev +64 more
TL;DR: A better understanding of mycoparasitism is offered, and the development of improved biocontrol strains for efficient and environmentally friendly protection of plants is enforced.
