Abstract: Europeanization is a two-way process, which involves the evolution of European institutions that impact on political structures and processes of the Member States. This article develops an approach to link conceptually the two dimensions of Europeanization by focusing on the ways in which Member State governments both shape European policy outcomes and adapt to them. Member States have an incentive to ‘upload’ their policies to the European level to minimize the costs in ‘downloading’ them at the domestic level. But they differ in both their policy preferences and their action capacities. Accordingly, Member States have pursued different strategies in responding to Europeanization. The article draws on evidence from the field of EU environmental policy-making to illustrate when Member States are likely to engage in pace-setting, foot-dragging or fence-sitting. It concludes with some considerations on whether pace-setting, foot-dragging and fence-sitting give rise to interest coalitions, which pitch Member States of diverse levels of economic development against each other.

Abstract: We hypothesized that in patients with chronic heart failure mesenteric venous congestion leads to increased bowel permeability, bacterial translocation, and thereby endotoxin release; the increased endotoxin challenge then causes immune activation with increased soluble CD14 levels and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha production. Patients with high soluble CD14 levels (indicative of endotoxin-cell interaction) have markedly increased plasma levels of TNF-alpha, soluble TNF receptors 1 and 2, and intracellular adhesion molecule-1, supporting this hypothesis.

Abstract: Onthebasisofameta-analysisofpairwisecorrelationsbetweenwork- ing memory tasks and cognitive ability measures, P. L. Ackerman, M. E. Beier, and M. O. Boyle (2005) claimed that working memory capacity (WMC) shares less than 25% of its variance with general intelligence (g) and with reasoning ability. In this comment, the authors argue that this is an underestimation because of several methodological shortcomings and biases. A reanalysis of the data reported in Ack- erman et al. using the correct statistical procedures demonstrates that g and WMC are very highly correlated. On a conceptual level, the authors point out that WMC should be regarded as an explanatory construct for intellectual abilities. Theories of working memory do not claim that WMC is isomorphic with intelligence factors but that it is a very strong predictor of reasoning ability and also predicts general fluid intelligence and g.

Abstract: A parameter-optimized off-axis setup for digital holographic microscopy is presented for simultaneous, high-resolution, full-field quantitative amplitude and quantitative phase-contrast microscopy and the detection of changes in optical path length in transparent objects, such as undyed living cells. Numerical reconstruction with the described nondiffractive reconstruction method, which suppresses the zero order and the twin image, requires a mathematical model of the phase-difference distribution between the object wave and the reference wave in the hologram plane. Therefore an automated algorithm is explained that determines the parameters of the mathematical model by carrying out the discrete Fresnel transform. Furthermore the relationship between the axial position of the object and the reconstruction distance, which is required for optimization of the lateral resolution of the holographic images, is derived. The lateral and the axial resolutions of the system are discussed and quantified by application to technical objects and to living cells.
