23 Jun 2003TL;DR: Numerical experience is reported for constructing scenario trees for the load and spot market prices entering a stochastic portfolio management model of a German utility.
Abstract: Portfolio and risk management problems of power utilities may be modeled by multistage stochastic programs. These models use a set of scenarios and corresponding probabilities to model the multivariate random data process (electrical load, stream flows to hydro units, and fuel and electricity prices). For most practical problems the optimization problem that contains all possible scenarios is too large. Due to computational complexity and to time limitations this program is often approximated by a model involving a (much) smaller number of scenarios. The proposed reduction algorithms determine a subset of the initial scenario set and assign new probabilities to the preserved scenarios. The scenario tree construction algorithms successively reduce the number of nodes of a fan of individual scenarios by modifying the tree structure and by bundling similar scenarios. Numerical experience is reported for constructing scenario trees for the load and spot market prices entering a stochastic portfolio management model of a German utility.

TL;DR: A comprehensive understanding of phenomena at interfaces with organic materials will improve the rational design of highly functional organic electronic devices.
Abstract: A most appealing feature of the development of (opto)electronic devices based on conjugated organic materials is the highly visible link between fundamental research and technological advances. Improved understanding of organic material properties can often instantly be implemented in novel device architectures, which results in rapid progress in the performance and functionality of devices. An essential ingredient for this success is the strong interdisciplinary nature of the field of organic electronics, which brings together experts in chemistry, physics, and engineering, thus softening or even removing traditional boundaries between the disciplines. Naturally, a thorough comprehension of all properties of organic insulators, semiconductors, and conductors is the goal of current efforts. Furthermore, interfaces between dissimilar materials-organic/organic and organic/inorganic-are inherent in organic electronic devices. It has been recognized that these interfaces are a key for device function and efficiency, and detailed investigations of interface physics and chemistry are at the focus of research. Ultimately, a comprehensive understanding of phenomena at interfaces with organic materials will improve the rational design of highly functional organic electronic devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Big Five factors of personality, the subfactors Sociability and Shyness, and all significant social relationships were repeatedly assessed by 132 students after entering university.
Abstract: Personality influences on social relationships and vice versa were longitudinally studied. Personality affected relationships, but not vice versa. After entry to university, 132 students participated for 18 month in a study in which the Big Five factors of personality, the subfactors Sociability and Shyness, and all significant social relationships were repeatedly assessed. A subsample kept diaries of all significant social interactions. After the initial correlation between personality and relationship quality was controlled for, Extraversion and its subfactors, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness predicted aspects of relationships such as number of peer relationships, conflict with peers, and falling in love. In contrast, relationship qualities did not predict personality traits, and changes in relationship qualities were unrelated to changes in personality traits. Consequences for dynamic-interactionistic views of personality and relationships are discussed.
