Abstract: Objective To determine the level of weight uniformity of fragments from tablets split into halves and dispensed by pharmacists. Design Pre-post comparison. Setting Laboratory analysis of split tablets returned unused from four long-term care facilities. Interventions Twenty-two dispensed prescriptions containing 560 split tablet halves were collected, and fragment weights (FWs) were determined. Theoretical weights (TWs) of split tablets of the same medications were determined mathematically. Main Outcome Measures Comparison of the mean FW with the mean TW of each dispensed prescription and determination of whether fragments met United States Pharmacopeia 24 (USP) criteria for weight variation of whole tablets. Results A significant difference ( P Conclusion Tablet splitting resulted in an unacceptably high incidence of weight variation. Standards should be developed to ensure uniformity of split tablets.

Abstract: To examine the relationship between premorbid adjustment and neuropsychological deficit in schizophrenia, this report examined retrospective ratings of social and school adjustment during three age epochs (childhood, early adolescence, and late adolescence) as predictors of neurocognitive performance in 61 clinically and pharmacologically stabilized schizophrenia outpatients. Results indicated greater cognitive deficits when premorbid adjustment was unfavorable, particularly for measures of attention and executive functions. Premorbid number and quality of peer relationships and psychosocial adaptation to the school environment were more closely related to neuropsychological performance during adulthood than were premorbid withdrawal and premorbid academic performance. Early onset of poor premorbid adjustment rather than deterioration from childhood to adolescence was associated with greater neuropsychological disturbance in adulthood. It is suggested that childhood onset of premorbid deficits in selective areas of social and academic adjustment appears to influence the cognitive performance seen in adult schizophrenia. This study is consistent with findings from other related reports; it extends these findings to a larger and clinically stabilized sample.

Abstract: While leukemia rates are thought to be lower in South and Central America, no study has systematically investigated incidence rates of the leukemia subtypes among Hispanics in the U.S. This was a retrospective cohort study, using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute, 1992 - 2001, to compare leukemia incidence rates as a function of race and ethnicity. It was found that in adults, Hispanics had lower incidence rates for each of the major types of leukemia as compared to non-Hispanic Whites: For AML, elderly Whites had an incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 1.61 in comparison to Hispanics (p < 0.001) and 1.27 in comparison to Blacks (p < 0.001); for CML, the IRR among the elderly was 1.42 that of Hispanics (p < 0.001) and 1.22 that of Blacks (p = 0.003); and for CLL, the IRR was 2.31 times that of Hispanics (p < 0.001) and 1.48 times that of Blacks (p < 0.001). In ALL, however, Hispanics aged 0 - 19 had a significantly higher incidence rate than Whites and Blacks, with an IRR of 1.32 compared to Whites (p < 0.001), and 2.62 compared to Blacks (p < 0.001). In AML, CML, and CLL, among people age 65 or older, white non-Hispanics have higher incidence rates than Blacks, and Blacks have higher incidence rates than Hispanics. Childhood ALL incidence rates are highest among Hispanics, and lowest among Blacks.

Abstract: Organic–inorganic perovskite materials in the form of nanocrystals and thin films have received enormous attention recently because of their unique optoelectronic properties such as high absorption coefficient, narrow and tunable emission bandwidth, high photoluminescence quantum yield, long exciton lifetime, and balanced charge transport properties. These properties have found applications in a number of important fields, including photovoltaic solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, sensors, and lasers. However, the stability of the materials and devices is strongly affected by several factors such as water moisture, light, oxygen, temperature, solvent, and other materials in contact such as metal oxides used in devices. Defects, particularly those related to surface states, play a critical role in the stability as well as the performance of the perovskites.
