Abstract: Hierarchical anatase TiO2 nanowire (HNW) arrays consisting of long single crystalline nanowire trunks and short single crystalline nanorod branches have been synthesized on Ti-foil substrate via a two-step hydrothermal growth process. The formation of the HNW arrays based on anatase TiO2 nanowire (NW) arrays can be ascribed to the crystallographic relationship between trunk and branch. The power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on such a HNW photoelectrode (4.51%) shows a significant enhancement compared to TiO2 nanowire (NW) array photoelectrode (3.12%) with similar thickness (∼15 μm in nanowire length), which can be attributed to more dye loading, superior light scattering ability and comparable electron transport rate for the former. Furthermore, flexible DSSC using TiO2 HNW arrays on Ti substrate as working electrode and transparent PEDOT/ITO-PET prepared via in situelectrodeposition as counter electrode shows a comparable photovoltaic performance to the rigid Pt/FTO-glass cell. A power conversion efficiency as high as 4.32% (Jsc = 7.91 mA cm−2, Voc = 796 mV, FF = 0.69) is obtained for the first time for fully flexible DSSC based on hierarchical TiO2 nanowire arrays and Pt-free counter electrode.

Abstract: This review explores the features and corresponding application of ZIF-67 and its derivatives. Thermally and chemically stable zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials have received extensive research and application interest. In particular, ZIF-67 can be synthesized by a facile and environmentally friendly organic synthesis method. The nanostructures and mean particle sizes of ZIF-67 can be adjusted by controlling experimental conditions carefully. The resulting ZIF-67 possesses the characteristics of a tunable pore aperture, highly stable structure, catalytic activity and so on. Furthermore, by combining the advantages of ZIF-67 and various components or structures, the resulting compounds have a potentially better performance than pure ZIF-67. Therefore, ZIF-67 and its derivatives have aroused great interest of scientists and have the potential to be applied to gas adsorption, molecular separation, electrochemistry, catalysis and so on.

Abstract: Objectives The global prevalence of IBS is difficult to ascertain, particularly in light of the heterogeneity of published epidemiological studies. The aim was to conduct a literature review, by experts from around the world, of community-based studies on IBS prevalence. Design Searches were conducted using predetermined search terms and eligibility criteria, including papers in all languages. Pooled prevalence rates were calculated by combining separate population survey prevalence estimates to generate an overall combined metaprevalence estimate. The heterogeneity of studies was assessed. Results 1451 papers were returned and 83, including 288 103 participants in 41 countries, met inclusion criteria. The mean prevalence among individual countries ranged from 1.1% in France and Iran to 35.5% in Mexico. There was significant variance in pooled regional prevalence rates ranging from 17.5% (95% CI 16.9% to 18.2%) in Latin America, 9.6% (9.5% to 9.8%) in Asia, 7.1% (8.0% to 8.3%) in North America/ Europe/Australia/New Zealand, to 5.8% (5.6% to 6.0%) in the Middle East and Africa. There was a significant degree of heterogeneity with the percentage of residual variation due to heterogeneity at 99.9%. Conclusions The main finding is the extent of methodological variance in the studies reviewed and the degree of heterogeneity among them. Based on this, we concluded that publication of a single pooled global prevalence rate, which is easily calculated, would not be appropriate or contributory. Furthermore, we believe that future studies should focus on regional and cross-cultural differences that are more likely to shed light on pathophysiology.

Abstract: Neuroprotective therapies which focus on factors leading to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) degeneration have been drawing more and more attention. The beneficial effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) on the glaucoma have been recently suggested, but its effects on eye tissue are complex and controversial in various studies. Recent clinical trials of systemically and topically administrated NGF demonstrate that NGF is effective in treating several ocular diseases, including glaucoma. NGF has two receptors named high affinity NGF tyrosine kinase receptor TrkA and low affinity receptor p75NTR. Both receptors exist in cells in retina like RGC (expressing TrkA) and glia cells (expressing p75NTR). NGF functions by binding to TrkA or p75NTR alone or both together. The binding of NGF to TrkA alone in RGC promotes RGC's survival and proliferation through activation of TrkA and several prosurvival pathways. In contrast, the binding of NGF to p75NTR leads to apoptosis although it also promotes survival in some cases. Binding of NGF to both TrkA and p75NTR at the same time leads to survival in which p75NTR functions as a TrkA helping receptor. This review discusses the current understanding of the NGF signaling in retina and the therapeutic implications in the treatment of glaucoma.
