Abstract: Relationships between root zone temperature, concentrations and uptake rates of NH 4 + and NO 3 − were studied in non-mycorrhizal roots of 4-year-old Norway spruce under controlled environmental conditions. Additionally, in a forest stand NH 4 + and NO 3 − uptake rates along the root axis and changes in the rhizosphere pH were measured. In the concentration (Cmin) range of 100–150 μM uptake rates of NH 4 + were 3–4 times higher than those of NO 3 − The preference for NH 4 + uptake was also reflected in the minimum concentration (Cmin) values. Supplying NH4NO3, the rate of NO 3 − uptake was very low until the NH 4 + concentrations had fallen below about 100 μM. The shift from NH 4 + to NO 3 − uptake was correlated with a corresponding shift from net H+ production to net H+ consumption in the external solution. The uptake rates of NH 4 + were correlated with equimolar net production of H+. With NO 3 − nutrition net consumption of H+ was approximately twice as high as uptake rates of NO 3 − In the forest stand the NO 3 − concentration in the soil solution was more than 10 times higher than the NH 4 + concentration (<100 μM), and the rhizosphere pH of non-mycorrhizal roots considerably higher than the bulk soil pH. The rhizosphere pH increase was particularly evident in apical root zones where the rates of water and NO 3 − uptake and nitrate reductase activity were also higher. The results are summarized in a model of water and nutrient transport to, and uptake by, non-mycorrhizal roots of Norway spruce in a forest stand. Model calculations indicate that delivery to the roots by mass flow may meet most of the plant demand of nitrogen and calcium, and that non-mycorrhizal root tips have the potential to take up most of the delivered nitrate and calcium.

Abstract: This paper reviews properties of ridge regres- sion for genomewide (genomic) selection and establishes close relationships with other meth- ods to model genetic correlation among rela- tives, including use of a kinship matrix and the simple matching coeffi cient as computed from marker data. A number of alternative models are then proposed exploiting ties between genetic correlation based on marker data and geostatis- tical concepts. A simple method for automatic marker selection is proposed. The methods are exemplifi ed using a series of experiments with test-cross hybrids of maize (Zea mays L.) con- ducted in fi ve environments. Results underline the need to appropriately model genotype- environment interaction and to employ an inde- pendent estimate of error. It is also shown that accounting for genetic effects not captured by markers may be important.

Abstract: Concomitant morphological and molecular analyses have led to major breakthroughs in the taxonomic organization of the phylum Glomeromycota. Fungi in this phylum are known to form arbuscular mycorrhiza, and so far three classes, five orders, 14 families and 29 genera have been described. Sensu lato, spore formation in 10 of the arbuscular mycorrhiza-forming genera is exclusively glomoid, one is gigasporoid, seven are scutellosporoid, four are entrophosporoid, two are acaulosporoid, and one is pacisporoid. Spore bimorphism is found in three genera, and one genus is associated with cyanobacteria. Here we present the current classification developed in several recent publications and provide a summary to facilitate the identification of taxa from genus to class level.

Abstract: Association-mapping methods promise to overcome the limitations of linkage-mapping methods. The main objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate various methods for association mapping in the autogamous species wheat using an empirical data set, (ii) determine a marker-based kinship matrix using a restricted maximum-likelihood (REML) estimate of the probability of two alleles at the same locus being identical in state but not identical by descent, and (iii) compare the results of association-mapping approaches based on adjusted entry means (two-step approaches) with the results of approaches in which the phenotypic data analysis and the association analysis were performed in one step (one-step approaches). On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic data of 303 soft winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) inbreds, various association-mapping methods were evaluated. Spearman's rank correlation between P -values calculated on the basis of one- and two-stage association-mapping methods ranged from 0.63 to 0.93. The mixed-model association-mapping approaches using a kinship matrix estimated by REML are more appropriate for association mapping than the recently proposed QK method with respect to (i) the adherence to the nominal α-level and (ii) the adjusted power for detection of quantitative trait loci. Furthermore, we showed that our data set could be analyzed by using two-step approaches of the proposed association-mapping method without substantially increasing the empirical type I error rate in comparison to the corresponding one-step approaches.
