Abstract: Members of the aureolic acid family are tricyclic polyketides with antitumor activity which are produced by different streptomycete species. These members are glycosylated compounds with two oligosaccharide chains of variable sugar length. They interact with the DNA minor groove in high-GC-content regions in a nonintercalative way and with a requirement for magnesium ions. Mithramycin and chromomycins are the most representative members of the family, mithramycin being used as a chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of several cancer diseases. For chromomycin and durhamycin A, antiviral activity has also been reported. The biosynthesis gene clusters for mithramycin and chromomycin A(3) have been studied in detail by gene sequencing, insertional inactivation, and gene expression. Most of the biosynthetic intermediates in these pathways have been isolated and characterized. Some of these compounds showed an increase in antitumor activity in comparison with the parent compounds. A common step in the biosynthesis of all members of the family is the formation of the tetracyclic intermediate premithramycinone. Further biosynthetic steps (glycosylation, methylations, acylations) proceed through tetracyclic intermediates which are finally converted into tricyclic compounds by the action of a monooxygenase, a key event for the biological activity. Heterologous expression of biosynthetic genes from other aromatic polyketide pathways in the mithramycin producer (or some mutants) led to the isolation of novel hybrid compounds.

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that word frequency estimates obtained from films and television subtitles are better to predict performance in word recognition experiments than the traditional word frequency estimates based on books and newspapers. In this study, we present a subtitle-based word frequency list for Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages. The subtitle frequencies are based on a corpus of 41M words taken from contemporary movies and TV series (screened between 1990 and 2009). In addition, the frequencies have been validated by correlating them with the RTs from two megastudies involving 2,764 words each (lexical decision and word naming tasks). The subtitle frequencies explained 6% more of the variance than the existing written frequencies in lexical decision, and 2% extra in word naming.

Abstract: The resistance profiles, for 15 antimicrobial agents, of 333 Salmonella strains representing the most frequent nontyphoidal serotypes, isolated between 1989 and 1998 in a Spanish region, and 9 reference strains were analyzed. All strains were susceptible to amikacin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and imipenem, and 31% were susceptible to all antimicrobials tested. The most frequent types of resistance were to sulfadiazine, tetracycline, streptomycin, spectinomycin, ampicillin, and chloramphenicol (ranging from 46 to 22%); 13% were resistant to these six drugs. This multidrug resistance pattern was found alone or together with other resistance types within serotypes Typhimurium (45%), Panama (23%), and Virchow (4%). Each isolate was also screened for the presence of class 1 integrons and selected resistance genes therein; seven variable regions which carried one (aadA1a, aadA2, or pse-1) or two (dfrA14-aadA1a, dfrA1-aadA1a, oxa1-aadA1a, or sat1-aadA1a) resistance genes were found in integrons.

Abstract: The present work was planned to research epidemiological and immunological features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a Caucasian population from the north of Spain (Asturias). There is only one specialized immunology laboratory in this region where samples from all patients with a plausible or a firm diagnosis of SLE are referred for immunological analysis. Since 1992 we have reviewed registered data from samples submitted to the immunology laboratory with a firm, definitive diagnosis of SLE, based on the fulfillment of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. We have constructed a database, which included 367 SLE patients. The point prevalence was 34.12/ 100 000 (95% CI: 30.63-37.61/100 000), whereas the incidence rate calculated during the last five years was 2.15/100 000/year (95% CI: 1.76-2.54/100 000/year). The female/male ratio varied according to the age at diagnosis, being maximum (50 : 1) between 22 and 28 years. The median age at diagnosis was significantly lower in females than in males. Immunological features also yielded sex and age peculiarities. The percentage of patients with anti-SSa antibodies yielded significant differences between males (18.6%) and females (34.6%). Anti-RNP and anti-Sm antibodies were more frequently present in childhood-onset patients, the difference with the oldest-onset group being statistically significant. Other analyses did not show significant differences, although, as a whole, we observed a trend towards a higher presence of autoantibodies related to an early disease onset.
