Abstract: The molecular genetics of vernalization, defined as the promotion of flowering by cold treatment, is still poorly understood in cereals. To better understand this mechanism, we cloned and characterized a gene that we named TaVRT-1 (wheat [Triticum aestivum] vegetative to reproductive transition-1). Molecular and sequence analyses indicated that this gene encodes a protein homologous to the MADS-box family of transcription factors that comprises certain flowering control proteins in Arabidopsis. Mapping studies have localized this gene to the Vrn-1 regions on the long arms of homeologous group 5 chromosomes, regions that are associated with vernalization and freezing tolerance (FT) in wheat. The level of expression of TaVRT-1 is positively associated with the vernalization response and transition from vegetative to reproductive phase and is negatively associated with the accumulation of COR genes and degree of FT. Comparisons among different wheat genotypes, near-isogenic lines, and cereal species, which differ in their vernalization response and FT, indicated that the gene is inducible only in those species that require vernalization, whereas it is constitutively expressed in spring habit genotypes. In addition, experiments using both the photoperiod-sensitive barley (Hordeum vulgare cv Dicktoo) and short or long day de-acclimated wheat revealed that the expression of TaVRT-1 is also regulated by photoperiod. These expression studies indicate that photoperiod and vernalization may regulate this gene through separate pathways. We suggest that TaVRT-1 is a key developmental gene in the regulatory pathway that controls the transition from the vegetative to reproductive phase in cereals.

Abstract: There are numerous reference equations available for the single-breath transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide ( T LCO ); however, it is not always clear which reference set should be used in clinical practice. The aim of the study was to develop the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) all-age reference values for T LCO . Data from 19 centres in 14 countries were collected to define T LCO reference values. Similar to the GLI spirometry project, reference values were derived using the LMS (lambda, mu, sigma) method and the GAMLSS (generalised additive models for location, scale and shape) programme in R. 12 660 T LCO measurements from asymptomatic, lifetime nonsmokers were submitted; 85% of the submitted data were from Caucasians. All data were uncorrected for haemoglobin concentration. Following adjustments for elevation above sea level, gas concentration and assumptions used for calculating the anatomic dead space volume, there was a high degree of overlap between the datasets. Reference values for Caucasians aged 5–85 years were derived for T LCO , transfer coefficient of the lung for carbon monoxide and alveolar volume. This is the largest collection of normative T LCO data, and the first global reference values available for T LCO .

Abstract: I present here a new model for the primary activation of precursor helper T cells. Observations demonstrate that the immune system learns not to respond to extrathymic, organ-specific self-antigens because of their early appearance in development. The immune system thus discriminates between peripheral self-antigens and foreign antigens and, when mature, usually makes an immune response against only the latter. Contemporary models for the activation and inactivation of T helper (Th) function do not account for such discrimination. The model proposed here is consistent with contemporary findings and incorporates a mechanism of peripheral self–nonself discrimination.

Abstract: Understanding firms’ interfaces with the community has become a familiar strategic concern for both firms and non-profit organizations. However, it is still not clear when different community engagement strategies are appropriate or how such strategies might benefit the firm and community. In this review, we examine when, how and why firms benefit from community engagement strategies through a systematic review of over 200 academic and practitioner knowledge sources on the antecedents and consequences of community engagement strategy. We analytically describe evidence on the rise of the community engagement strategy literature over time, its geographical spread and methodological evolution. A foundational concept underlying many studies is the ‘continuum of community engagement’. We build on this continuum to develop a typology of three engagement strategies: transactional, transitional and transformational engagement. By identifying the antecedents and outcomes of the three strategies, we find that the payoffs from engagement are largely longer-term enhanced firm legitimacy, rather than immediate cost–benefit improvements. We use our systematic review to draw implications for future research and managerial practice.

Abstract: Uptake kinetics and contents of GABA in cultured, normal (i.e. nontransformed) glia cells obtained from the brain hemispheres of newborn mice were measured together with the activity of the GABA transaminase. During three weeks of culturing the activity of the transaminase rose from a low neonatal value toward the level in the adult brain. The uptake kinetics indicated an unsaturable component together with an uptake following Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Both theKm (40 μM) and theVmax (0.350 nmol×min−1×mg−1 cell protein) were reasonably comparable to the corresponding values in brain slices, and theVmax was much higher than that reported for other glial preparations. The GABA content was low (<5 nmol/mg cell protein), which is in agreement with the high activity of the GABA transaminase.
