Abstract: High titre replication of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in cell culture is restricted to primary human fibroblasts. During acute infection in vivo, HCMV nucleic acids and antigens have been found in various organs. Using only morphological criteria, inconsistent data have been reported about the cell types that can be infected by HCMV. In particular, the role of fibroblasts in organ infections has remained unclear. To define accurately the target cells of HCMV in vivo, tissue sections from lung and gastrointestinal tract of patients suffering from acute HCMV infection were investigated using immunohistochemical double-labelling analyses. Monoclonal antibodies with defined specificity against immediate early (IE), early (E) and late (L) viral antigens and antibodies directed against cell marker proteins were employed to identify infected cells. The results demonstrated that a broad spectrum of cells was infected by HCMV in vivo. Consistent with their susceptibility in culture, fibroblasts formed a major population of HCMV-infected cells. In contrast, haemopoietic cells were only infrequently stained with virus-specific antibodies. Fibroblasts, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and macrophages appeared to be permissive for HCMV replication. Contrary to this, polymorphonuclear cells showed only IE gene expression, indicating that these cells were abortively infected. Abstract: Decades of speculation about a warmer, wetter Mars climate in the planet’s first billion years postulate a denser CO2-rich atmosphere than at present. Such an atmosphere should have led to the formation of outcrops rich in carbonate minerals, for which evidence has been sparse. Using the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, we have now identified outcrops rich in magnesium-iron carbonate (16 to 34 weight percent) in the Columbia Hills of Gusev crater. Its composition approximates the average composition of the carbonate globules in martian meteorite ALH 84001. The Gusev carbonate probably precipitated from carbonate-bearing solutions under hydrothermal conditions at near-neutral pH in association with volcanic activity during the Noachian era.

Abstract: Comprehensive recommendations on the diagnosis of Turner syndrome (TS) and the care of affected individuals were published in 1994. In the light of recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of TS, an international multidisciplinary workshop was convened in March 2000, in Naples, Italy, in conjunction with the Fifth International Symposium on Turner Syndrome to update these recommendations. The present paper details the outcome from this workshop. The genetics and diagnosis of the syndrome are described, and practical treatment guidelines are presented.

Abstract: Objective Bladder cancer (BC) has the highest lifetime treatment costs per patient of all cancers. The high recurrence rate and ongoing invasive monitoring requirement are the key contributors to the economic and human toll of this disease. The purpose of this paper was to utilize the recent literature to identify opportunities for improving the benefits and costs of BC care.

Abstract: We conducted a prospective study to define the sensitivity of 131I scintigraphy and 18FDG PET whole-body scanning in the detection of thyroid cancer and metastases. Methods: Forty-one patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who underwent thyroidectomy and 131I elimination of the remaining thyroid were studied by 18FDG whole-body PET in 52 examinations and by 131I whole-body scanning. Results: Combined 18FDG and 131I imaging resulted in a sensitivity of about 95%, with alternating uptake of 131I and 18FDG in the metastases: 131I trapping metastases with no 18FDG uptake and 18FDG trapping metastases with no 131I uptake. Five uptake types were differentiated. Alternating uptake was found in about 90% of the patients, which was nearly identical to the sensitivity of the combined 131I/18FDG investigation. In six patients with increasing human thyroglobulin levels, we found that 18FDG whole-body PET localized positive neck metastases of papillary thyroid carcinomas that were histologically confirmed after extirpation. Conclusion: Combination 18FDG and 131I whole-body imaging protocol enables detection of local recurrence or metastases on whole-body scans that are often not shown by other imaging methods. Biochemical grading of thyroid cancer may also be possible with this method: Tumors with remaining functional differentiation for hormone synthesis and iodine uptake have low glucose metabolism in more than 95%; tumors without this functional differentiation of 131I uptake show high glucose metabolism. Fluorine-18-FDG uptake seems to be an indicator of poor functional differentiation, and possibly higher malignancy, in thyroid cancer.
