Characterization of protective extracellular membrane-derived vesicles produced by Streptococcus pneumoniae

TLDR
This work demonstrates the active production of vesicle production by Streptococcus pneumoniae from the plasma membrane, rather than being a product from cell lysis, and shows that pneumococcus produces membrane-derived vesicles particularly enriched in lipoproteins and short-chain fatty acids.

Extracellular membrane vesicles in the three domains of life and beyond.

TL;DR: This review of current knowledge on EVs in the three domains of life and their interactions with the viral world concludes that the regulation of lipid composition plays a major role in initiating membrane curvature.

Modern isolation and separation techniques for extracellular vesicles.

TL;DR: This review focuses on recently emerging and modern EV isolation and separation techniques, including size-, charge-, and affinity- based techniques while excluding ultracentrifugation and precipitation-based techniques due to their multiple limitations.

Standardization of sample collection, isolation and analysis methods in extracellular vesicle research

TL;DR: The need for standardization of specimen handling, appropriate normative controls, and isolation and analysis techniques to facilitate comparison of results is emphasized, and it is recognized that continual development and evaluation of techniques will be necessary as new knowledge is amassed.

Serotype replacement in disease after pneumococcal vaccination

TL;DR: The magnitude of serotype replacement in disease can be attributed, in part, to a combination of lower invasiveness of the replacing serotypes, biases in the pre-vaccine carriage data (unmasking), and bias in the disease surveillance systems that could underestimate the true amount of replacement.
