TLDR
Proton and carbon-13 nmr spectra of unsonicated lipid bilayers and biological membranes are generally dominated by strong proton-proton and proton–carbon dipolar interactions and are rather difficult to analyse.
Abstract
Proton and carbon-13 nmr spectra of unsonicated lipid bilayers and biological membranes are generally dominated by strong proton–proton and proton–carbon dipolar interactions. As a result the spectra contain a large number of overlapping resonances and are rather difficult to analyse. Nevertheless, important information on the structure and dynamic behaviour of lipid systems has been provided by these techniques (Wennerstrom & Lindblom, 1977).

Infrared dichroism investigations on the acyl chain ordering in lamellar structures: III. Characterisation of the chain tilt and biaxiality in the solid phases of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine as a function of temperature and hydration using molecular order parameters

TL;DR: In this article, the IR linear dichroism of selected absorption bands of the acyl chains of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) has been analyzed in terms of the longitudinal and transverse order parameter of acyl chain, S θ and D θψ, respectively.

Solid-state NMR for the study of membrane systems: the use of anisotropic interactions

TL;DR: The use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a tool to determine the structure of membrane molecules is reviewed with a particular emphasis on techniques that provide information on orientation or order.

NMR methods for measuring lateral diffusion in membranes

TL;DR: Both pulsed field gradient (PFG) and exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) methods can be adapted to permit NMR measurements of lateral diffusion in membranes, with particular emphasis on results from the laboratory using (1)H PFG NMR measured in magnetically aligned bicelles and (31)P CODEX measurements in spherical phospholipid vesicles.

Membrane structure and dynamics as viewed by solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

TL;DR: This paper will present some recent results obtained by high-resolution solid-state 1H NMR on the conformation of gramicidin A incorporated in a phosphatidylcholine bilayers as a function of the cosolubilization solvent initially used to prepare the samples.

Orientational properties of biological pigments in ordered systems studied with polarized light: photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes in membranes.

TL;DR: A discussion is presented of the problems involved in the interpretation of linear dichroism and fluorescence depolarization experiments on macroscopically ordered membrane systems and it is argued that in general the latter information can only be obtained on utilizing a number of experimental scattering geometries.

Principles of magnetic resonance

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of changing the precession frequency of the magnetic field has been studied using NMR to study rate properties. But the effect is limited to the case of double and double resonance.
