Proton and carbon-13 nmr spectra of unsonicated lipid bilayers and biological membranes are generally dominated by strong proton–proton and proton–carbon dipolar interactions. As a result the spectra contain a large number of overlapping resonances and are rather difficult to analyse. Nevertheless, important information on the structure and dynamic behaviour of lipid systems has been provided by these techniques (Wennerstrom & Lindblom, 1977).read more

Synthesis of methyl ω-deuterated tetradecanoate and hexadecanoate
P.W. Westerman,N. Ghrayeb +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, two synthetic routes from methyl hydrogen tetradecanedioate have been proposed for the synthesis of ω-deuterated alkanoic acids, one using the selective reducing properties of sodium borodeuteride and the other using a coupling reaction between an organic halide and lithium di-(trideuteriomethyl) cuprate.

TL;DR: In this article, a constant particle NPT ensemble on hydrated lipid bilayers composed of SDPC (1-stearoyl-2-docosahexaenoic acid) and SOPC (18:0-18:1PC) was used to investigate the role played by molecular structure in protecting polyunsaturated lipids against oxidation.

Orientation and conformation of lipids in crystals of transmembrane proteins.
Derek Marsh,Tibor Páli +1 more
TL;DR: The order parameters of the lipid chains and glycerol backbones in protein crystals are characterised by a much wider distribution of orientational order than is found in fluid lipid bilayers and reconstituted lipid–protein membranes, which indicates that the lipids that are resolved in crystals of membrane proteins are mostly not representative of the entire lipid– protein interface.

Microscopy and Deuterium NMR Studies on Induced Cholesteric Lyotropic Mesophases of Potassium Laurate
TL;DR: In this article, the textures of oriented cholesteric samples were examined under the polarizing microscope and the associated patterns depended on the mesophase type and on the applied field direction.
