TLDR
Insecticide research, having passed through several Golden Ages, is now in a renaissance of integrating chemicals and biologicals for sustainable pest control with human safety.Abstract:
Insecticide research led to the first "complete" victories in combatting pests almost 50 years ago with the chlorinated hydrocarbons followed quickly by the organophosphates, methylcarbamates, and pyrethroids--all neuroactive chemicals. This Golden Age of Discovery was the source of most of our current insecticides. The challenge then became health and the environment, a Golden Age met with selective and degradable compounds. Next the focus shifted to resistance, novel biochemical targets, and new chemical approaches for pest control. The current Golden Age of Genetic Engineering has curtailed, but is unlikely to eliminate, chemical use on major crops. Insecticide research, having passed through several Golden Ages, is now in a renaissance of integrating chemicals and biologicals for sustainable pest control with human safety.read more

Rapid Experimental Evolution of Pesticide Resistance in C. elegans Entails No Costs and Affects the Mating System
Patricia C. Lopes,Patricia C. Lopes,Élio Sucena,M. Emília Santos,Sara Magalhães,Sara Magalhães +5 more
TL;DR: Experimental evolution is established as a powerful tool to tackle pesticide resistance, and paves the way to further investigations manipulating environmental and/or genetic factors underlying adaptation to pesticides.

Evaluation of pyrethroid exposures in pregnant women from 10 Caribbean countries.
Eric Dewailly,Martin Forde,Lyndon Robertson,Nisrin Kaddar,Elhadji A. Laouan Sidi,Suzanne Côté,Eric Gaudreau,Olivia Drescher,Pierre Ayotte +8 more
TL;DR: The need for Caribbean public health authorities to encourage their populations, and in particular pregnant women, to utilize this class of pesticides more judiciously given the potentially adverse effects of exposure on fetuses and infants is underscored.

Defence mechanisms against insecticides temephos and diflubenzuron in the mosquito Aedes caspius: the P-glycoprotein efflux pumps.
TL;DR: The possible role of P‐gps in defence against the insecticides temephos and diflubenzuron was investigated in the mosquito Aedes caspius (Pallas), and the genomic DNA sequences encoding for P‐gp transporters were isolated to provide molecular instruments for future research into the expression and characterization of genes codifying for P-gps.

Effects of permethrin, cypermethrin and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid on rat sperm motility in vitro evaluated with computer-assisted sperm analysis
TL;DR: It is revealed that permethrin and cypermethrin could reduce sperm motility in vitro in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and 3-PBA did not reduce sperm Motility directly at all concentrations and treatment periods.

Toxicokinetics and Tissue Distribution of Deltamethrin in Adult Sprague–Dawley Rats
TL;DR: The toxicokinetics and dose-dependent systemic/tissue distribution of deltamethrin (DLM) over a range of doses in adult Sprague-Dawley (S-D) rats was characterized to provide comprehensive time course blood and tissue data for development of a physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model for DLM.

Safer and more effective insecticides for the future
John E. Casida,Gary B. Quistad +1 more
TL;DR: The use of synthetic organic insecticides has served for the past half century as the principal means to control insect-borne diseases and minimize losses in food and fibre production from pest insect attack as mentioned in this paper.
