Golden age of insecticide research: past, present, or future?

TLDR
Insecticide research, having passed through several Golden Ages, is now in a renaissance of integrating chemicals and biologicals for sustainable pest control with human safety.
Abstract
Insecticide research led to the first "complete" victories in combatting pests almost 50 years ago with the chlorinated hydrocarbons followed quickly by the organophosphates, methylcarbamates, and pyrethroids--all neuroactive chemicals. This Golden Age of Discovery was the source of most of our current insecticides. The challenge then became health and the environment, a Golden Age met with selective and degradable compounds. Next the focus shifted to resistance, novel biochemical targets, and new chemical approaches for pest control. The current Golden Age of Genetic Engineering has curtailed, but is unlikely to eliminate, chemical use on major crops. Insecticide research, having passed through several Golden Ages, is now in a renaissance of integrating chemicals and biologicals for sustainable pest control with human safety.

Toxicological potential of thiamethoxam insecticide on albino rats and its residues in some organs

TL;DR: The results suggested that thiamethoxam caused impairment of the physiological parameters and histological features in albino rats, which may influence the use of this insecticide against pests attacking vegetables in fruit stage.

The effect of natural products on head lice: in vitro tests and clinical evidence

TL;DR: It is concluded that several plant products offer promise for new compounds to treat head lice infestation, however, the number of clinical studies is very limited, and there is an urgent need to increase research assessing the effectiveness and safety of promising compounds.

A virulence factor encoded by a polydnavirus confers tolerance to transgenic tobacco plants against lepidopteran larvae, by impairing nutrient absorption.

TL;DR: A virulence factor encoded by the polydnavirus associated with the braconid wasp Toxoneuron nigriceps (TnBV), an endophagous parasitoid of noctuid moth larvae, appears to be involved both in immunosuppression and endocrine alterations of the host.

A spectrophotometric assay for pyrethroid-cleaving enzymes in human serum.

TL;DR: A direct continuous spectrophotometric assay to measure pyrethroid-cleaving enzymes in human serum was developed using cis- and trans-alpha-naphthyl-(2, 2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylate (cis- andTrans-nAPHthyl-Cl2CA), however, a correlation of enzyme activity to sex or age could not be observed.

Effects of permethrin given before mating on the behavior of F1-generation in mice.

TL;DR: Results show that permethrin at dose levels of 9.8 and 19.6 mg/kg/d can induce a significant risk to the offspring following treatment of F0-mice before mating.

Safer and more effective insecticides for the future

TL;DR: The use of synthetic organic insecticides has served for the past half century as the principal means to control insect-borne diseases and minimize losses in food and fibre production from pest insect attack as mentioned in this paper.
