Each year, the American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies, brings together in a single document the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and the cardiovascular risk factors listed in the AHA’s My Life Check - Life’s Simple 7 (Figure1), which include core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, diet, and weight) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure [BP], and glucose control) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The Statistical Update represents …

Dietary Acid Load: mechanisms and evidence of its health repercussions.

TL;DR: The available evidence is reviewed which evaluates the association of the PRAL of the diet with the incidence of chronic diseases and metabolic disorders, as well as related mechanisms involved in their development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Advances in heart regeneration based on cardiomyocyte proliferation and regenerative potential of binucleated cardiomyocytes and polyploidization.

TL;DR: It is proposed to standardize and independently validate cardiac regeneration studies, encourage the field to study the proliferative potential of binucleated and polyploid mononucleated cardiomyocytes, and determine whether induction ofpolyploidization can enhance cardiac function post-injury.
Journal ArticleDOI

Alterations in Vascular Function Associated With the Use of Combustible and Electronic Cigarettes.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that e‐cigarette use is not associated with a more favorable vascular profile, and future longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate the long‐term risks of sustained e‐cigarettes use.

Post-ischaemic administration of the murine Canakinumab-surrogate antibody improves outcome in experimental stroke.

TL;DR: The data for the first time demonstrate the efficacy of selective post-ischaemic IL-1β blockade in improving outcome following experimental ischaemia/reperfusion brain injury in the mouse and encourage further focused clinical studies assessing the potential of the approved IL- 1β antibody Canakinumab, as an adjuvant therapy to thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke patients.

Alteration of Cardiac Performance and Serum B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Level in Healthy Aging.

TL;DR: Investigation of healthy aging on left ventricular, right ventricular (RV), and left atrial (LA) performance and their relationship with serum B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in a sample of the general population without prevalent cardiovascular risk factors and structural heart disease found decreases in LA reservoir and conduit strain are the earliest markers of age-related cardiac remodeling.

Risks and benefits of estrogen plus progestin in healthy postmenopausal women: Principal results from the Women's Health Initiative randomized controlled trial

TL;DR: Overall health risks exceeded benefits from use of combined estrogen plus progestin for an average 5.2-year follow-up among healthy postmenopausal US women, and the results indicate that this regimen should not be initiated or continued for primary prevention of CHD.

Report of the expert committee on the diagnosis and classification of diabetes mellitus

TL;DR: It was deemed essential to develop an appropriate, uniform terminology and a functional, working classification of diabetes that reflects the current knowledge about the disease.

Global and regional mortality from 235 causes of death for 20 age groups in 1990 and 2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010

Rafael Lozano, +195 more
- 15 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 aimed to estimate annual deaths for the world and 21 regions between 1980 and 2010 for 235 causes, with uncertainty intervals (UIs), separately by age and sex, using the Cause of Death Ensemble model.
