Five studies tested two general hypotheses: Individuals differ in their use of emotion regulation strategies such as reappraisal and suppression, and these individual differences have implications for affect, well-being, and social relationships. Study 1 presents new measures of the habitual use of reappraisal and suppression. Study 2 examines convergent and discriminant validity. Study 3 shows that reappraisers experience and express greater positive emotion and lesser negative emotion, whereas suppressors experience and express lesser positive emotion, yet experience greater negative emotion. Study 4 indicates that using reappraisal is associated with better interpersonal functioning, whereas using suppression is associated with worse interpersonal functioning. Study 5 shows that using reappraisal is related positively to well-being, whereas using suppression is related negatively.read more

Daily stress and the benefits of mindfulness: Examining the daily and longitudinal relations between present-moment awareness and stress responses
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined whether present-moment awareness during daily stressful events predicted enhanced responding to (a) the same day's event, (b) a stressful event on the subsequent day and (c) stressful events on average, among a sample of adults (N = 143) over 20 days.

Experiential Avoidance and Emotion Regulation in Borderline Personality Disorder
TL;DR: Experiential avoidance likely plays a prominent role in the difficulties faced by persons with BPD as mentioned in this paper, and there are several key features of BPD such as a vulnerability to negative or distressing emotions, difficulty regulating emotions, and distress intolerance.

The neural correlates of worry in association with individual differences in neuroticism
TL;DR: Investigation of the neural correlates of state worry in association with neuroticism found activation in the retrosplenial and visual cortex was decreased in individuals scoring higher on neuroticism during worry, possibly suggesting reduced autobiographical specificity and visual mental imagery.

Quadratic Associations Between Empathy and Depression as Moderated by Emotion Dysregulation
TL;DR: Findings suggest tendencies to respond empathically to others’ needs is neither an adaptive nor maladaptive characteristic but rather moderate empathy, particularly in the context of good regulation, may offer the greatest protection against depression.

The five factor model of personality and emotion regulation: A meta-analysis.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and emotion regulation strategies and found that higher levels of extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were associated with greater typically adaptive emotion regulation.
