Five studies tested two general hypotheses: Individuals differ in their use of emotion regulation strategies such as reappraisal and suppression, and these individual differences have implications for affect, well-being, and social relationships. Study 1 presents new measures of the habitual use of reappraisal and suppression. Study 2 examines convergent and discriminant validity. Study 3 shows that reappraisers experience and express greater positive emotion and lesser negative emotion, whereas suppressors experience and express lesser positive emotion, yet experience greater negative emotion. Study 4 indicates that using reappraisal is associated with better interpersonal functioning, whereas using suppression is associated with worse interpersonal functioning. Study 5 shows that using reappraisal is related positively to well-being, whereas using suppression is related negatively.read more

Internalizing Symptoms in Female Adolescents: Associations with Emotional Awareness and Emotion Regulation
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the direct and indirect effects of emotional awareness on internalizing symptoms by exploring the extent to which certain emotion regulation strategies influence this relationship, and found that reappraisal accounted for the effect of emotion awareness on depressive symptoms, but suppression was not associated with emotional awareness.

Rethinking emotion: cognitive reappraisal is an effective positive and negative emotion regulation strategy in bipolar disorder.
TL;DR: It is suggested that reappraisal may be an effective regulation strategy for both negative and positive emotion across both healthy adults and individuals with bipolar disorder.

The importance of distinguishing between the different eating disorders (sub)types when assessing emotion regulation strategies
TL;DR: Women across different ED subtypes were inclined to suppress emotions and lacked the capacity to reappraise emotions, and the effect of coexisting other emotional problems such as anxiety and depression may differ across ED sub types.

Sleep quality but not sleep quantity effects on cortisol responses to acute psychosocial stress.
TL;DR: The observed differential sleep effects may indicate that while the body may be unable to maintain normal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal functioning in an acute psychosocial stress situation after falling prey to low sleep quality, it may retain capacities to deal with challenges during extended times of sleep deprivation.
