TLDR
It is concluded that the lung has significant hematopoietic potential including being a major site of platelet biogenesis and orthotopic, single-lung transplantation experiments into thrombocytopenic and hematOPoietIC progenitor-deficient animals revealed that peripheral blood platelet counts and bone marrow hematopolietic progenitors could be fully reconstituted by the lung transplant procedure.

Advances in research on the effects of platelet activation in acute lung injury (Review)

TL;DR: Evidence is provided to support the importance of the consideration of platelets in the search for ALI interventional targets, with the latest research progress on secretion of bioactive mediators from platelets, platelet activation-related signaling pathways, and the direct contact reactions between platelets and neutrophils with endothelial cells that result in ALI described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rasa3 deficiency minimally affects thrombopoiesis but promotes severe thrombocytopenia due to integrin-dependent platelet clearance

TL;DR: A potentially novel, integrin-based mechanism of platelet clearance that could be critical for the understanding of select inherited and acquired thrombocytopenias is described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Platelets, Bacterial Adhesins and the Pneumococcus

TL;DR: The bacteria-platelet interplay in the context of adhesin–receptor interactions and platelet-activating bacterial proteins is discussed, with a main emphasis on S. aureus and S. pneumoniae.
Journal ArticleDOI

Factors Associated with Platelet Activation-Recent Pharmaceutical Approaches

TL;DR: An overview of the available antiplatelet agents is being portrayed, together with agents possessing off-set platelet-inhibitory actions, while an extensive presentation of drugs under investigation is given.

Decoding Human Megakaryocyte Development.

TL;DR: Single-cell RNA sequencing of human MKs from embryonic yolk sac and fetal liver is used to characterize the transcriptome, cellular heterogeneity, and developmental trajectories of early megakaryopoiesis and identifies a subpopulation of CD42b+CD14+ MKs in vivo that exhibit high expression of genes associated with immune responses.

Platelet aggregates, a marker of severe COVID-19 disease.

TL;DR: The presence of platelet aggregates and macrothrombocytes indicating increased platelet activity could be consistent with severe COVID-19 infection and is further evidence of the important role that platelets play when CO VID-19 manifests with thrombotic complications or respiratory failure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lung megakaryocytes display distinct transcriptional and phenotypic properties.

TL;DR: Findings support the notion that the lung plays an independent role in the development and functional maturation of MKs, and highlight the existence of a lung-specific MK phenotype that is skewed toward roles in immunity and inflammation.
