TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Neuronal activity in primate dorsal anterior cingulate cortex signals task conflict and predicts adjustments in pupil-linked arousal

TL;DR: It is shown that single dACC neurons signal conflict between task goals and distractors in the rhesus macaque, particularly for biologically relevant social stimuli and response to errors.
Journal ArticleDOI

BAC Transgenic Mice Express Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein in Central and Peripheral Cholinergic Neurons

TL;DR: Transgenic mice in which enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) is expressed under the control of endogenous choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) transcriptional regulatory elements, by knock-in of eGFP within a bacterial artificial chromosome spanning the ChAT locus and expression of this construct as a transgene are described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Turning heads: Development of vertebrate branchiomotor neurons

TL;DR: This review is focused on a subset of cranial motor neurons called the branchiomotor neurons, which innervate muscles derived from the branchial (pharyngeal) arches, and the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the development of these vital neuronal networks are addressed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cognitive Perspectives on SLA: The Associative-Cognitive CREED

TL;DR: The Associative-Cognitive CREED framework as mentioned in this paper is one of the most popular frameworks for second language acquisition, which is based on the same principles of associative and cognitive learning that underpin the rest of human knowledge.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cold sensitivity of recombinant TRPA1 channels.

TL;DR: ITC-induced increase of the open probability of TRPA1 may underlie the increase in whole-cell currents induced by deep cooling, which supports the previous findings thatTRPA1 responds to deep cooling.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
