TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Developmental robotics: theory and experiments

TL;DR: A new Self-Aware Self-Effecting (SASE) agent concept is proposed, based on the authors' SAIL and Dav developmental robots, and some experimental results for developmental robotics are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution and development of neural controllers for locomotion, gradient-following, and obstacle-avoidance in artificial insects

TL;DR: This paper describes how the SGOCE paradigm has been used to evolve developmental programs capable of generating recurrent neural networks that control the behavior of simulated insects.

Origin and evolutionary process of the CNS elucidated by comparative genomics analysis of planarian ESTs

TL;DR: Comparisons of planarian EST clones with all ORFs of the complete genome sequences of the human, fruit fly, and nematode showed that >95% of these 116 nervous system-related genes were commonly shared among these organisms, thus providing evidence at the molecular level for the existence of a common ancestral CNS.
Journal ArticleDOI

Acrylamide axonopathy revisited

TL;DR: Substantial evidence now indicates that axon degeneration is a secondary effect and is, therefore, not pathophysiologically significant and these findings have important implications for future mechanistic research, classification schemes, and assessment of neurotoxicity risk.
Journal ArticleDOI

Homeostatic regulation of the endoneurial microenvironment during development, aging and in response to trauma, disease and toxic insult

TL;DR: A greater knowledge of the dynamic nature of tight junctions and the factors that induce and/or modulate these key elements of the BNI will increase the understanding of peripheral nerve disorders as well as stimulate the development of therapeutic strategies to treat these disorders.
