TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Journal ArticleDOI
Proprioception in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Part 2: Clinical assessment and intervention
TL;DR: The aim of this second part is to present specific methods for clinical assessment and interventions to improve proprioception in the spine and extremities.
Journal ArticleDOI
GPCR Mediated Regulation of Synaptic Transmission
TL;DR: The focus of this review is to explore the role of G protein signaling as it relates to neurotransmission, as well as to discuss the recently determined inhibitory mechanism of Gβγ dimers acting directly on the exocytotic machinery proteins to inhibit neurotransmitter release.
Journal ArticleDOI
Current developments in spinal cord injury research
TL;DR: A better understanding of the pathophysiology and early treatment for the spinal cord-injured patient has led to a continued decrease in mortality, decreased acute hospitalization and complication rates, and more rapid rehabilitation and re-entry into society.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired neurotransmitter uptake in PC12 cells overexpressing human Cu/Zn-superoxide dimutase-implication for gene dosage effects in down syndrome
Orna Elroy-Stein,Yoram Groner +1 more
TL;DR: Results show that elevation of CuZnSOD activity interferes with the transport of biogenic amines into chromaffin granules, which may contribute to the neurobiological abnormalities of Down's syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
A model of the olivo-cerebellar system as a temporal pattern generator.
TL;DR: A novel model that enables the olivo-cerebellar system to function as a generator of temporal patterns is proposed, based on subthreshold oscillations in a network of inferior olivary neurons and their control by the cerebellar cortex and nuclei.

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
