TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Journal ArticleDOI
Methodologies for studying human knowledge
TL;DR: The best way to study the algorithmic level is to look for differential learning outcomes in pedagogical experiments that manipulate instructional experience, which provides control and prediction in realistically complex learning situations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gut microbiome in ADHD and its relation to neural reward anticipation
Esther Aarts,Thomas H. A. Ederveen,Jilly Naaijen,Marcel P. Zwiers,Jos Boekhorst,Harro M. Timmerman,Sanne P. Smeekens,Mihai G. Netea,Jan K. Buitelaar,Barbara Franke,Sacha A. F. T. van Hijum,Alejandro Arias Vasquez +11 more
TL;DR: Increased relative abundance of this functionality was significantly associated with decreased ventral striatal fMRI responses during reward anticipation, independent of ADHD diagnosis and age.

L-Type Ca2+ Channels Are Essential for Glutamate-Mediated CREB Phosphorylation and c-fos Gene Expression in Striatal Neurons
Anjali M. Rajadhyaksha,Amy K. Barczak,Wendy Macías,Jean-Christophe Leveque,Susan E. Lewis,Christine Konradi +5 more
TL;DR: In primary striatal neurons glutamate-mediated signal transduction is dependent on functional L-type Ca2+ channels, and the second messenger pathway that activates CREB phosphorylation and c-fos gene expression is likely activated by Ca2+.
Journal ArticleDOI
The neurophysiological bases of EEG and EEG measurement: a review for the rest of us
TL;DR: The present paper addresses the neurophysiological source of EEG, propagation of the EEG signal, technical aspects of EEG measurement, and implications for interpretation of EEG data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Head and Neck Position Sense
TL;DR: The importance of anatomical structures in the cervical spine responsible for position sense and how their interaction with the CNS affects the authors' ability to plan and execute effective purposeful movements is highlighted.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
