TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.
Book

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

The thalamus as a monitor of motor outputs.

TL;DR: Current evidence indicates that many and possibly all thalamic relays to the neocortex are about instructions that cortical and subcortical neurons are contributing to movement control, and the perceptual functions of the cortex can thus be seen to represent abstractions from ongoing motor instructions.

Biologically Inspired Modular Neural Networks

Farooq Azam
TL;DR: This dissertation presents an in depth study of the currently available modular neural network architectures along with highlighting their shortcomings and investigates new modular artificial neural network models in order to overcome pointed out shortcomings.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bacterial penetration across the blood-brain barrier during the development of neonatal meningitis.

TL;DR: Understanding the mechanisms of bacterial penetration across the blood-brain barrier may help develop novel approaches to preventing bacterial meningitis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Somatosensory Cortical Plasticity in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treated by Acupuncture

TL;DR: As CTS‐induced paresthesias constitute diffuse, synchronized, multidigit symptomatology, the results for maladaptive change and correction are consistent with Hebbian plasticity mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nkx5-1 controls semicircular canal formation in the mouse inner ear

TL;DR: Nkx5-1 is the first ear-specific molecule identified to play a crucial role in the formation of the mammalian vestibular system by inactivation of the homeobox gene by homologous recombination in mice.
