TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Brain activity and fatigue during prolonged exercise in the heat.
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that fatigue due to hyperthermia during prolonged exercise in the heat is in part related to alterations in frontal cortical brain activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leukocyte recruitment in the cerebrospinal fluid of mice with experimental meningitis is inhibited by an antibody to junctional adhesion molecule (JAM).
Aldo Del Maschio,Ada De Luigi,Ines Martin-Padura,Manfred Brockhaus,Tamas Bartfai,Paolo Fruscella,Luciano Adorini,Gianvito Martino,Roberto Furlan,Maria Grazia De Simoni,Elisabetta Dejana,Elisabetta Dejana +11 more
TL;DR: It is reported that BV11 administration was able to attenuate cytokine-induced meningitis in mice and Junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) may be a new target in limiting the inflammatory response that accompaniesMeningitis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cell damage excites nociceptors through release of cytosolic ATP
Sean P. Cook,Edwin W. McCleskey +1 more
TL;DR: If cytosol provides a rapid nociceptive signal from damaged tissue, then ATP is a critical messenger and P2X receptors are its sensor, and ion channels that are activated by extracellular ATP are recorded.
Journal ArticleDOI
The contribution of activated astrocytes to Aβ production: Implications for Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis
TL;DR: Cytokines including TNF-α+IFN-γ increase levels of endogenous BACE1, APP, and Aβ and stimulate amyloidogenic APP processing in astrocytes as well as oligomeric and fibrillar Aβ42, suggesting a cytokine- and A β42-driven feed-forward mechanism that promotes astroCytic Aβ production.

Cerebellar timing systems.
TL;DR: The multiple-timer hypothesis suggests an alternative account of neuroimaging results implicating the cerebellum in higher cognitive processes, which may reflect the automatic preparation of multiple responses rather than be associated with processes such as semantic analysis, error detection, attention shifting, or response selection.
