TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Modulation of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus by hippocampus-derived estrogen and androgen

TL;DR: Takeaway is that hippocampus-derived E2, T, and DHT play a major role in modulation of synaptic plasticity, and this level is much higher than that in circulation.

Prospective and declarative memory problems following moderate and severe traumatic brain injury.

TL;DR: Problems with declarative memory, attention, and executive functioning do not adequately account for poorer PM performance following a TBI, suggesting that PM should also be assessed following TBI.
Journal ArticleDOI

Differential psychostimulant-induced activation of neural circuits in dopamine transporter knockout and wild type mice.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that dopaminergic mechanisms may mediate the WT responses to psychostimulants, whereas non-dopaminergic systems predominate in the mutant.
Journal ArticleDOI

Topical agents for the management of musculoskeletal pain.

TL;DR: The use of topical analgesics in the treatment of the most prevalent musculoskeletal pain syndromes is described, with a focus on mechanisms for drug delivery and clinical trials data.
Journal ArticleDOI

Original Contribution: Dynamic feedback to the superior colliculus in a neural network model of the gaze control system

TL;DR: A collicular mechanism is shown to provide plausible explanations for conflicting results upon electrical stimulation of rostral versus caudal sites on the colliculus, and can generate reasonable trajectories for both eye and head platforms in the head-free condition.
