TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Intrinsic primary afferent neurons and nerve circuits within the intestine

TL;DR: The IPANs may be involved in pathological changes in enteric function following inflammation, and exhibit long-term changes in their states of excitation that can be induced by extended periods of low frequency activity in synaptic inputs and by inflammatory mediators.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biomechatronic Design and Control of an Anthropomorphic Artificial Hand for Prosthetic and Robotic Applications

TL;DR: In this article, a biomechatronic approach is proposed to harmonize the mechanical design of an anthropomorphic artificial hand with the design of the hand control system, and a proper hand control scheme is designed and implemented for the study and optimization of hand motor performance in order to achieve a human-like motor behavior.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thyroid hormones states and brain development interactions

TL;DR: The hypothesis that neurodevelopmental abnormalities might be related to the thyroid hormones is plausible and the alterations of neurotransmitters and disturbance in the GABA, adenosine and pro/antioxidant systems in CNS due to the Thyroid dysfunction may retard the neurogenesis and CNS growth and the reverse is true.

Artemin is a vascular-derived neurotropic factor for developing sympathetic neurons.

TL;DR: The chemoattractive properties of ARTN were confirmed by the demonstration that sympathetic neuroblasts migrate and project axons toward ARTN-soaked beads implanted into mouse embryos.
Journal ArticleDOI

Modular organization of internal models of tools in the human cerebellum

TL;DR: Results were consistent with predictions by the MOdular Selection And Identification Controller (MOSAIC) model that multiple internal models compete to partition sensory-motor experiences and their outputs are linearly combined for a particular context.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
