TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.
Book
Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Journal ArticleDOI
Neurobiology of REM and NREM sleep.
TL;DR: The results of a new series of experimental paradigms in rodents to measure the neurocognitive effects of sleep loss and sleep interruption (modeling sleep apnea) provide animal model data congruent with those in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
GFAP Is Necessary for the Integrity of CNS White Matter Architecture and Long-Term Maintenance of Myelination
Wolfgang Liedtke,Winfried Edelmann,Phyllis Bieri,Fung Chow Chiu,Nicholas J. Cowan,Raju Kucherlapati,Cedric S. Raine +6 more
TL;DR: GFAP expression is essential for normal white matter architecture and blood-brain barrier integrity, and its absence leads to late-onset CNS dysmyelination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Model-based hand tracking using a hierarchical Bayesian filter
TL;DR: This paper sets out a tracking framework, which is applied to the recovery of three-dimensional hand motion from an image sequence, and handles the issues of initialization, tracking, and recovery in a unified way.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cerebral organization for language in deaf and hearing subjects: Biological constraints and effects of experience
Helen J. Neville,Daphne Bavelier,David P. Corina,Josef P. Rauschecker,Avi Karni,Anil K. Lalwani,Allen R. Braun,Vince Clark,Peter Jezzard,Robert Turner +9 more
TL;DR: Results suggest that the early acquisition of a natural language is important in the expression of the strong bias for these areas to mediate language, independently of the form of the language.
Journal ArticleDOI
Specific deficit of the ON response in visual transmission by targeted disruption of the mGluR6 gene
Masayuki Masu,Hideki Iwakabe,Yoshiaki Tagawa,Tomomitsu Miyoshi,Masayuki Yamashita,Yutaka Fukuda,Hitoshi Sasaki,Kano Hiroi,Yasuhisa Nakamura,Ryuichi Shigemoto,Masahiko Takada,Kenji Nakamura,Kazuki Nakao,Motoya Katsuki,Shigetada Nakanishi +14 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that mGluR6 is essential in synaptic transmission to the ON bipolar cell and that the OFF response provides an important means for transmitting visual information.
