TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Visual complexity: a review.

TL;DR: Form complexity and form probability are shown to be linked through their reciprocal relationship in complexity theory, which is in turn shows to be consistent with recent developments in perceptual learning and neural circuit theory.

Genetic Gating of Human Fear Learning and Extinction Possible Implications for Gene-Environment Interaction in Anxiety Disorder

TL;DR: Results show that only carrier of the 5-HTTLPR s allele exhibited conditioned startle potentiation, whereas carriers of the COMT met/met genotype failed to extinguish conditioned fear.

Attachment, Temperament, and Adrenocortical Activity in Infancy. A Study of Psychoendocrine Regulation.

TL;DR: This paper examined the relation among adrenocortical stress reactivity, infant emotional or proneness-to-todistress temperament, and quality of attachment in 66 infants tested at 9 and at 13 months.
Journal ArticleDOI

A highlight on Sonic hedgehog pathway

TL;DR: This review of emerging studies are being conducted in order to find new inhibitors for Shh signaling pathway, which could be safely used in clinical trials and highlight some clinical trials that use the Shh pathway as a target for treating brain cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Specification of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons in the vertebrate CNS

TL;DR: The early specification of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons during vertebrate CNS development relies on signals produced by a small number of organizing centers, which define the manner in which they may be established, the inductive signals they produce, and candidate signaling systems that control the later development of the dopamine system.
