TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Abstract Grammatical Processing of Nouns and Verbs in Broca's Area: Evidence from FMRI
TL;DR: FMRI results confirm a role for Broca's area in abstract grammatical processing, and are interpreted in terms of a network of regions in left prefrontal cortex that are recruited for processing abstract morphosyntactic features and overt morphophonological content.
Book ChapterDOI
Volume transmission as a key feature of information handling in the central nervous system possible new interpretative value of the Turing's B-type machine.
Luigi F. Agnati,Kjell Fuxe +1 more
TL;DR: The chapter concludes that learning in the CNS networks can take place not only by instructions acting on the cells, but also by changing the characteristics of the extracellular matrix, for example, by focal changes in its capability of transmitting or destroying a signal flowing through it.
Journal ArticleDOI
The rebirth of neuroscience in psychosomatic medicine, Part I: historical context, methods, and relevant basic science.
Richard D. Lane,Shari R. Waldstein,Shari R. Waldstein,Margaret A. Chesney,J. Richard Jennings,William R. Lovallo,Peter J. Kozel,Robert M. Rose,Douglas A. Drossman,Neil Schneiderman,Julian F. Thayer,Oliver G. Cameron +11 more
TL;DR: Various methods available for human neuroscientific investigation are examined and their relative strengths and weaknesses are discussed and examples of how the brain influences end organs through “information transfer systems,” including the autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immune systems are provided.

Determination of the Excitatory Potencies of Fluoroquinolones in the Central Nervous System by an In Vitro Model
TL;DR: The proposed hippocampus slice model not only is suitable for giving valuable alerts as to convulsive potential during candidate selection but also enables mechanistic investigations, which pointed to the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor as the probable target of the fluoroquinolone effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
New Moves in Motor Control
TL;DR: Some of the new insights into motor network function are reviewed and how these advances might bridge gaps in the understanding of motor control are indicated to indicate how neurogenetic approaches can complement classical physiological studies.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
