TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

EMG and EPP-Integrated Human–Machine Interface Between the Paralyzed and Rehabilitation Exoskeleton

TL;DR: The interface rebuilds a closed-loop motion control system for paralyzed patients and realizes harmonious control of the human-machine system.

Learning and Transfer of Modulated Locomotor Controllers

TL;DR: A novel architecture and training procedure for locomotion tasks where a monolithic end-to-end architecture fails completely, learning with a pre-trained spinal module succeeds at multiple high-level tasks, and enables the effective exploration required to learn from sparse rewards.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transversus abdominis and the superficial abdominal muscles are controlled independently in a postural task.

TL;DR: Dissociation of the behaviour of TrA and the other abdominal muscles suggests that TrA may be controlled independently of the motor command for limb movement in contrast to theother abdominal muscles.

The song system of the human brain

TL;DR: Melody repetition and harmonization produced highly similar patterns of activation, however, whereas all three tasks activated secondary auditory cortex (posterior Brodmann Area 22), only melody repetition and Harmonization activated the planum polare (BA 38), implying that BA 38 is responsible for an even higher level of musical processing than BA 22.

Modeling the effects of anesthesia on the electroencephalogram.

TL;DR: Changes to the electroencephalogram (EEG) observed during general anesthesia are modeled with a physiological mean field theory of electrocortical activity and 86 parameter sets are identified that exhibit a strong "biphasic" rise in total power, a feature often observed in experiments.
