TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Journal ArticleDOI
How many neurons do you have? Some dogmas of quantitative neuroscience under revision.
TL;DR: These four dogmas, which claim that the cerebral cortex is the pinnacle of brain evolution, are examined and challenged, and other interpretations or simply their replacement with alternative views are proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain and odor: I. Alteration of human EEG by odor administration
Tyler S. Lorig,Gary E. Schwartz +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between time domain patterns of EEG activity and self-reports for individuals exposed to different odants, including spiced apple, eucalyptus, and lavender odors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Network Plasticity in Adaptive Filtering and Behavioral Habituation
TL;DR: The negative-image model described here provides a mechanistic framework for understanding habituation, which is connected to ideas on dynamic predictive coding, and suggests insights for understanding autism spectrum disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decreased activity of spontaneous and noxiously evoked dorsal horn cells during transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
TL;DR: It was shown that dorsal horn neurons which can potentially transmit noxious information to supraspinal levels, can have their cell activity decreased during TENS application to somatic receptive fields.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of Dietary Choice in Livestock on Rangelands and its Implications for Management
TL;DR: Diet training may enable managers to create a foraging group more suited to management goals and additional research is needed to determine how age at which exposure occurs, as well as how duration, intensity, variability and complexity of exposure early in life affect dietary habits of adults.

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.
Book
Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
