TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Polyphenols: factors influencing their sensory properties and their effects on food and beverage preferences
Isabelle Lesschaeve,Ann C. Noble +1 more
TL;DR: Variations in proanthocyanidin composition, such as polymer size, extent of galloylation, and formation of derivatives, affect both bitterness and astringency in fruits and beverages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of central set on human postural responses
TL;DR: This finding suggests that the initial magnitude of postural responses were centrally set to anticipated postural perturbation amplitudes based on sequential experience with the stimulus, and errors in initial response magnitude appear to be partially corrected by reciprocal antagonist activity.

Alpha rhythm of the EEG modulates visual detection performance in humans.
Tolgay Ergenoglu,Tamer Demiralp,Zubeyir Bayraktaroglu,Mehmet Ergen,Huseyin Beydagi,Yağız Üresin +5 more
TL;DR: Results show that short-lasting changes in brain's excitability state are reflected the relative alpha power of the EEG, which may explain significant variability in perceptual processes and ERP generation especially at boundary conditions such as sensory threshold.

Identifying the brain's most globally connected regions
TL;DR: Combining wGBC and uGBC analyses for the characterization of the most highly connected, and thus most functionally important, regions of the brain demonstrates that brain regions outside primary sensory-motor networks are highly involved in coordinating information throughout the brain.

From the neuromatrix to the pain matrix (and back).
TL;DR: The original concept of the “Neuromatrix” as it was initially proposed by Melzack and its subsequent transformation into a pain-specific matrix is reviewed and it is shown that the fraction of the neuronal activity measured using currently available macroscopic functional neuroimaging techniques is likely to be largely unspecific for nociception.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
