TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Electromyographic activity from human laryngeal, pharyngeal, and submental muscles during swallowing
TL;DR: The pattern of muscle activity associated with the swallow showed a high level of intrasubject agreement; the presence of somewhat different patterns among subjects indicated a degree of population variance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immortalizing oncogenes subvert the establishment of granule cell identity in developing cerebellum
Wei-Qiang Gao,Mary E. Hatten +1 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that early postnatal external germinal layer progenitors are normally fated to a granule cell identity and that expression of the SV40 large T-antigen oncogene subverts mechanisms that control granule neuron fate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Swarm cognition in honey bees
TL;DR: Findings from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral biology are synthesized to show that some key features of cognition in the neuron-based brains of vertebrates are also present in the insect-based swarm of honey bees.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Catecholaminergic System of the Quail Brain: Immunocytochemical Studies of Dopamine Beta-Hydroxylase and Tyrosine Hydroxylase
TL;DR: A high density of dopamine β‐hydroxylase‐ and tyrosine hydroxyase‐immunoreactive fibers and punctate structures was found in several steroid‐sensitive brain regions that are implicated in the control of reproduction.

Peptide neurotransmitters activate a cation channel complex of NALCN and UNC-80
TL;DR: NALCN is identified as the cation channel activated by substance P receptor, and it is suggested that UNC-80 and Src family kinases, rather than a G protein, are involved in the coupling from receptor to channel.
