TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.
Abstract
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or

How does the cerebral cortex work? Development, learning, attention, and 3-D vision by laminar circuits of visual cortex.

TL;DR: The identified cortical mechanisms promise to generalize to explain how other perceptual and cognitive processes work, and begin to unify three fields: infant cortical development, adult cortical neurophysiology and anatomy, and adult visual perception.
Journal ArticleDOI

Josephson junction simulation of neurons

TL;DR: Josephson junction neurons provide a new tool for exploring long-term large-scale dynamics for networks of neurons and can be coupled together in ways that mimic electrical and chemical synapses.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gait Analysis of Adult Paraplegic Rats after Spinal Cord Repair

TL;DR: It is concluded that normal rats use a multitude of interchangeable step sequence patterns, and that the spinal cord repair strategy leads to recovery of some of these patterns following complete spinal cord transection.

What can advertisers learn from neuroscience

TL;DR: The insights of neuroscience are only just becoming available for the study of advertising as discussed by the authors, and the contribution so far has been modest or substantive is a lesser question than what neuroscience could do for our longer-term understanding of how advertising works.
Journal ArticleDOI

High Resolution Optical/Near-Infrared Imaging of Cool Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented new multi-wavelength observations with 1.5 and 4x the spatial resolution of previous ground-based observations at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, which allowed them to isolate interesting features such as the star-forming knots detected in the warm ULIG sample.

Book

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective

TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.

TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier

TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again

TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.

TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
