TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Book
Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.
Book
Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.

Distinct 5' SCL enhancers direct transcription to developing brain, spinal cord, and endothelium: neural expression is mediated by GATA factor binding sites.
Angus M. Sinclair,Berthold Göttgens,Linda M. Barton,Maureen L. Stanley,Luc Pardanaud,M. Klaine,Martin Gering,Sabine Bahn,María José Sánchez,Anthony J. Bench,J.L. Fordham,Ernesto Bockamp,Anthony R. Green +12 more
TL;DR: The neural expression pattern of the SCL gene was highly conserved in mouse, chicken, and zebrafish embryos and the 5' region of the chicken SCL locus exhibited a striking degree of functional conservation in transgenic mice, suggesting that SCL performs critical functions in neural development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Olfactory hallucinations and olfactory identification ability in patients with schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders
TL;DR: For patients with schizophrenia, women were more likely to report olfactory hallucinations and had higher UPSIT scores than men and members of all psychiatric diagnostic categories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neural Bases of Postural Control
TL;DR: The body posture during standing and walking is maintained due to the activity of a closed-loop control system: its functional organization, the distribution of postural functions in different parts of the central nervous system, and theActivity of neuronal networks controlling posture.
Journal ArticleDOI
Combined transcranial direct current stimulation and robot-assisted gait training in patients with chronic stroke: a preliminary comparison:
Christian Geroin,Alessandro Picelli,Daniele Munari,Andreas Waldner,Christopher Tomelleri,Nicola Smania +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated whether robot-assisted gait training combined with transcranial direct current stimulation is more effective than conventional walking rehabilitation for improving walking ability in stroke patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beneficial and adverse psychotropic effects of antiepileptic drugs in patients with epilepsy: a summary of prevalence, underlying mechanisms and data limitations.
TL;DR: More rigorous double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials on larger numbers of patients with epilepsy, with clear inclusion/exclusion criteria, that are specifically designed to investigate psychotropic changes are more likely to produce results that inform clinical practice and direct future research.
