TLDR
The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.Abstract:
I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his orread more

Adaptive self-organization in a realistic neural network model
Christian Meisel,Thilo Gross +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown in a realistic model that spike-time-dependent synaptic plasticity can self-organize neural networks robustly toward criticality, suggesting that the interplay between dynamics and topology may be essential for neural information processing.

Child Language: Acquisition And Growth
TL;DR: This chapter focuses on the development of an integrated theory of language acquisition through the acquisition of phonology, syntax, semantics and semantics in the context of a young child.
Journal ArticleDOI
Feelings and the body: The Jamesian perspective on autonomic specificity of emotion §
TL;DR: The construct of autonomic specificity continues to influence a number of core theoretical issues in affective science, such as the existence of basic or 'natural kinds' of emotion, the structure of affective space, the cognition-emotion relationship, and the function of emotion.

CB1 cannabinoid receptor antagonist-induced opiate withdrawal in morphine-dependent rats
Miguel Navarro,Julie A. Chowen,Rocío A Carrera M,del Arco I,María Ángeles Villanúa,Martin Y,Amanda J. Roberts,George F. Koob,de Fonseca Fr +8 more
TL;DR: It is reported that the selective CB1 receptor antagonist SR 141716A induced behavioral and endocrine alterations associated with opiate withdrawal in morphine-dependent animals in a dose-dependent manner and that naloxone induced an opiates withdrawal syndrome in animals made cannabinoid-dependent by repeated administration of the potent cannabinoid agonist HU-210.

Machine Learning : A Probabilistic Perspective
TL;DR: This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach, and is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.

Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control.
Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Jonathan R. Wolpaw,Niels Birbaumer,Niels Birbaumer,Dennis J. McFarland,Gert Pfurtscheller,Theresa M. Vaughan +6 more
TL;DR: With adequate recognition and effective engagement of all issues, BCI systems could eventually provide an important new communication and control option for those with motor disabilities and might also give those without disabilities a supplementary control channel or a control channel useful in special circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of the blood–brain barrier
TL;DR: The structure and function of the BBB is summarised, the physical barrier formed by the endothelial tight junctions, and the transport barrier resulting from membrane transporters and vesicular mechanisms are described.

Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again
TL;DR: Clark as mentioned in this paper argues that the mental has been treated as a realm that is distinct from the body and the world, and argues that a key to understanding brains is to see them as controllers of embodied activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature-nuture reconceptualized in developmental perspective: A bioecological model.
TL;DR: The authors propose an empirically testable theoretical model that goes beyond and qualifies the established behavioral genetics paradigm by allowing for nonadditive synergistic effects, direct measures of the environment, and mechanisms of organism-environment interaction through which genotypes are transformed into phenotypes.
