Abstract: A novel antenna reconfiguration mechanism based on the displacement of liquid metal sections is presented. The liquid nature of the moving parts of the antenna helps avoid the main disadvantage of mechanically-actuated reconfigurable antennas which is the mechanical failure of their solid parts due to material fatigue, creep or wear. Furthermore, the displacement of liquid elements can be more effectively performed than in the case of solid materials by applying precise microfluidic techniques such as continuous-flow pumping or electrowetting. The reconfiguration mechanism is demonstrated through the design, fabrication and measurement of a radiation pattern reconfigurable antenna. This antenna operates at 1800 MHz with 4.0% bandwidth and is capable of performing beam-steering over a 360° range with fine tuning. The antenna is a novel circular Yagi-Uda array, where the movable parasitic director and reflector elements are implemented by liquid metal mercury (Hg). The parasitics are placed and rotated in a circular microfluidic channel around the driven element by means of a flow generated and controlled by a piezoelectric micropump. The measured results demonstrate good performance and the applicability of the microfluidic system.

Abstract: In the past years, the scientific community has placed a special interest in remotely sensing soil moisture and vegetation parameters. Radiometry and radar techniques have been widely used for years. Global Navigation Satellite Systems opportunity signals Reflected (GNSS-R) over the earth's surface are younger, but they have already shown their potential to perform these observations. This paper presents a GNSS-R technique, based on Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements, that allows the retrieval of several geophysical parameters from land surfaces. This technique measures the power of the interference signal between the direct GPS signal and the reflected one after scattering over the land, so it is called Interference Pattern Technique (IPT). This paper presents the results obtained after applying the IPT for topography, soil moisture, and vegetation height retrievals over vegetation-covered soils.

Abstract: We present the experimental observation of scalar multipole solitons in highly nonlocal nonlinear media, including dipole, tripole, quadrupole, and necklace-type solitons, organized as arrays of out-of-phase bright spots. These complex solitons are metastable, but with a large parameters range where the instability is weak, permitting their experimental observation.

Abstract: We report the first experimental observation of three-dimensional light bullets, excited by femtosecond pulses in a system featuring quasi-instantaneous cubic nonlinearity and a periodic, transversally modulated refractive index. Stringent evidence of the excitation of light bullets is based on time-gated images and spectra which perfectly match our numerical simulations. Furthermore, we reveal a novel evolution mechanism forcing the light bullets to follow varying dispersion or diffraction conditions, until they leave their existence range and decay.
