Abstract: Vehicle detectors provide essential information about parking occupancy and traffic flow. To cover large areas that lack a suitable electrical infrastructure, wired sensors networks are impractical because of their high deployment and maintenance costs. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with autonomous sensor nodes can be more economical. Vehicle detectors intended for a WSN should be small, sturdy, low power, cost-effective, and easy to install and maintain. Currently available vehicle detectors based on inductive loops, ultrasound, infrared, or magnetic sensors do not fulfill the requirements above, which has led to the search for alternative solutions. This paper presents a vehicle detector which includes a magnetic and an optical sensor and is intended as sensor node for use with a WSN. Magnetic sensors based on magnetoresistors are very sensitive and can detect the magnetic anomaly in the Earth's magnetic field that results from the presence of a car, but their continuous operation would drain more than 1.5 mA at 3 V, hence limiting the autonomy of a battery-supplied sensor node. Passive, low-power optical sensors can detect the shadow cast by car that covers them, but are prone to false detections. The use of optical triggering to wake-up a magnetic sensor, combined with power-efficient event-based software, yields a simple, compact, reliable, low-power sensor node for vehicle detection whose quiescent current drain is 5.5 μA. This approach of using a low-power sensor to trigger a second more specific sensor can be applied to other autonomous sensor nodes.

Abstract: Regular aerosol backscatter measurements using an elastic-backscatter lidar were performed between May 2000 and December 2002 in Barcelona (Spain), within the framework of the European project EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network). The mixed-layer depth was one of the major parameters to be retrieved. Three derivative methods have been tested in this complex coastal area using the range-squared-corrected lidar signal: (1) the minimum of its first derivative, (2) the minimum of its second derivative, and (3) the minimum of the first derivative of its logarithm. The second method was found to give statistically the best results when compared to radiosoundings, and was used to process the whole dataset. A number of 162 days and 660 profiles averaged over 30 min have been examined. Between 1000 and 1500 UTC, the mixed-layer depth oscillates between 300 and 1450 m in summer and between 390 and 1420 m in winter. The standard deviation for this portion of the day is 180 and 256 m, respectively, in summer and winter. In summer, low heights (mainly limited to 400–800 m) are associated with large mesoscale compensatory subsidence over the sea and to the thermal internal boundary-layer formation. The strong coastal and orographic influences and the climatological settling of Barcelona determine the complexity of the boundary-layer dynamics and the high heterogeneity of the lidar signals. In many cases, single lidar analyses do not allow an unambiguous determination of the mixed-layer depth. Two diurnal cycle measurements are discussed together with synoptic maps, backtrajectories and radiosoundings in order to outline the complexity of the area and the limitations of the methods.

Abstract: Crack propagation in brittle materials with anisotropic surface energy is important in applications involving single crystals, extruded polymers, or geological and organic materials. Furthermore, when this anisotropy is strong, the phenomenology of crack propagation becomes very rich, with forbidden crack propagation directions or complex sawtooth crack patterns. This problem interrogates fundamental issues in fracture mechanics, including the principles behind the selection of crack direction. Here, we propose a variational phase-field model for strongly anisotropic fracture, which resorts to the extended Cahn-Hilliard framework proposed in the context of crystal growth. Previous phase-field models for anisotropic fracture were formulated in a framework only allowing for weak anisotropy. We implement numerically our higher-order phase-field model with smooth local maximum entropy approximants in a direct Galerkin method. The numerical results exhibit all the features of strongly anisotropic fracture and reproduce strikingly well recent experimental observations.
