Abstract: . The European Academy of Wind Energy (eawe), representing universities and institutes with a significant wind energy programme in 14 countries, has discussed the long-term research challenges in wind energy. In contrast to research agendas addressing short- to medium-term research activities, this eawe document takes a longer-term perspective, addressing the scientific knowledge base that is required to develop wind energy beyond the applications of today and tomorrow. In other words, this long-term research agenda is driven by problems and curiosity, addressing basic research and fundamental knowledge in 11 research areas, ranging from physics and design to environmental and societal aspects. Because of the very nature of this initiative, this document does not intend to be permanent or complete. It shows the vision of the experts of the eawe, but other views may be possible. We sincerely hope that it will spur an even more intensive discussion worldwide within the wind energy community.

Abstract: In this work, a periodic 4 × 4 lay-out of resistive inductive (RL) shunted piezoelectric transducer (PZT) patches is designed and applied to achieve broadband vibration reduction of a flexible isotropic plate over tunable frequency bands. Each surface-bonded PZT patch is connected to a single independent RL circuit and all shunt circuits are tuned at the same frequency. A finite element-based design methodology is used to predict the attenuation properties of the unit cell that characterize the periodic assembly. The predictions are experimentally validated by measuring the spatial average harmonic response of the plate. Significant broadband attenuation is obtained over frequency bands centered at the resonance frequency of the shunting circuit.

Abstract: The term halogen bonding encompasses any non-covalent interaction involving halogens as electrophilic species. High strength and directionality are the remarkable features of halogen bonding that fully justify its use as a primary intermolecular interaction to dictate molecular self-assembly processes. This chapter will outline the use of halogen bonding in crystal engineering and will highlight the obtainment of heteromeric crystal structures with complex topologies. Even though the use of halogen bonding is still in its infancy, the growing interest in the field shown by the crystal engineering community promises major advances in the future.

Abstract: Light propagation in distributed-feedback optical structures with gain or loss regions is shown to provide an accessible laboratory tool to visualize in optics the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Dirac equation with non-Hermitian interactions. Spectral singularities and PT symmetry breaking of the Dirac Hamiltonian are shown to correspond to simple observable physical quantities and are related to well-known physical phenomena such as resonance narrowing and laser oscillation.

Abstract: The problem of estimating the frequency of a harmonic signal embedded in broad-band noise is considered. The paper focuses on the extended Kalman filter frequency tracker, which is the application of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) framework to the frequency estimation problem. The EKF frequency tracker recently proposed in the literature is characterized by a vector of three design parameters {q,r,/spl epsi/}, whose role and tuning is still a controversial and unclear issue. In this paper it is shown that a wise parametrization of the extended Kalman frequency tracker is characterized by just one parameter: the /spl epsi/ must be set to zero to achieve the basic property of unbiasedness in a noise-free setting; the performances of the tracker are not influenced independently by q and r; and what really matters is the ratio /spl lambda/=r/q only. The proposed simplification of the extended Kalman filter frequency tracker allows an easier and more transparent tuning of its tracking behavior.
