Abstract: Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria; CNPs) have been found to have both pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant effects on different cell systems or organisms. In order to untangle the mechanisms which underlie the biological activity of nanoceria, we have studied the effect of five different CNPs on a model relevant aquatic microorganism. Neither shape, concentration, synthesis method, surface charge (ζ-potential), nor nominal size had any influence in the observed biological activity. The main driver of toxicity was found to be the percentage of surface content of Ce3+ sites: CNP1 (58%) and CNP5 (40%) were found to be toxic whereas CNP2 (28%), CNP3 (36%) and CNP4 (26%) were found to be non-toxic. The colloidal stability and redox chemistry of the most and least toxic CNPs, CNP1 and CNP2, respectively, were modified by incubation with iron and phosphate buffers. Blocking surface Ce3+ sites of the most toxic CNP, CNP1, with phosphate treatment reverted toxicity and stimulated growth. Colloidal destabilization with Fe treatment only increased toxicity of CNP1. The results of this study are relevant in the understanding of the main drivers of biological activity of nanoceria and to define global descriptors of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) bioactivity which may be useful in safer-by-design strategies of nanomaterials.

Abstract: Global forest restoration targets have been set, yet policy makers and land managers lack guiding principles on how to invest limited resources to achieve them. We conducted a meta-analysis of 166 studies in naturally regenerating and actively restored forests worldwide to answer: (1) To what extent do floral and faunal abundance and diversity and biogeochemical functions recover? (2) Does recovery vary as a function of past land use, time since restoration, forest region, or precipitation? (3) Does active restoration result in more complete or faster recovery than passive restoration? Overall, forests showed a high level of recovery, but the time to recovery depended on the metric type measured, past land use, and region. Abundance recovered quickly and completely, whereas diversity recovered slower in tropical than in temperate forests. Biogeochemical functions recovered more slowly after agriculture than after logging or mining. Formerly logged sites were mostly passively restored and generally recovered quickly. Mined sites were nearly always actively restored using a combination of planting and either soil amendments or recontouring topography, which resulted in rapid recovery of the metrics evaluated. Actively restoring former agricultural land, primarily by planting trees, did not result in consistently faster or more complete recovery than passively restored sites. Our results suggest that simply ending the land use is sufficient for forests to recover in many cases, but more studies are needed that directly compare the value added of active versus passive restoration strategies in the same system. Investments in active restoration should be evaluated relative to the past land use, the natural resilience of the system, and the specific objectives of each project.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the exploitation of linear-frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) radars for noncontact range tracking of vital signs, e.g., respiration. Such short-range system combines hardware simplicity and tracking precision, thus outperforming other remote-sensing approaches in the addressed biomedical scenario. A rigorous mathematical analysis of the operating principle of the LFMCW radar in the context of vital-sign monitoring, which includes the explanation of key aspects for the maintenance of coherence, is detailed. A precise phase-based range-tracking algorithm is also presented. Exhaustive simulations are carried out to confirm the suitability and robustness against clutter, noise, and multiple scatterers of the proposed radar architecture, which is subsequently implemented at the prototype level. Moreover, live data from real experiments associated to a metal plate and breathing subjects are obtained and studied.

Abstract: Lupus nephritis is characterized by immune complex deposition and inflammatory cell infiltration. Therefore, the initiation and progression of lupus nephritis in MRL/MpJ Fas(lpr/lpr) (MRL/lpr) mice were investigated, with a focus on the expression of several chemokines and chemokine receptors. Mice were monitored for proteinuria from 6 to 20 wk of age, and kidneys were examined every 2 wk by light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunohistologic analyses. Furthermore, the expression of chemokines, chemokine receptors, and proinflammatory cytokines was analyzed in ribonuclease protection assays. MRL/lpr mice demonstrated increased expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, regulated upon activation, normal T cell-expressed and -secreted protein, inducible protein of 10 kD, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1beta at week 8. At that time point, levels of circulating and glomerular immune complexes were increased, and no proteinuria or histopathologic signs of renal damage could be observed. As assessed in immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization analyses, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and regulated upon activation, normal T cell-expressed and -secreted protein expression was preferentially located in the glomeruli and interstitium. Mononuclear cell infiltration of the kidney was observed by weeks 10 to 12. At week 12, the renal expression of chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1), CCR2, and CCR5 was increased, mice became proteinuric, and renal damage was histologically evident. Finally, the expression of proinflammatory cytokines was detected (weeks 12 to 14). In summary, (1) chemokines are upregulated before inflammatory cell infiltration, proteinuria, and kidney damage are observed; (2) chemokine generation is restricted to sites of subsequent inflammatory cell infiltration, i.e., glomeruli and interstitium; (3) chemokine receptor expression parallels mononuclear cell infiltration; and (4) proinflammatory cytokines are upregulated later, in parallel with inflammatory cell infiltration and the onset of proteinuria. These results support the hypothesis that chemokines initiate leukocyte infiltration and precede proteinuria and renal damage in MRL/lpr mice.
