Abstract: Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the development and characterization of patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) models for cancer research. PDX models mostly retain the principal histologic and genetic characteristics of their donor tumor and remain stable across passages. These models have been shown to be predictive of clinical outcomes and are being used for preclinical drug evaluation, biomarker identification, biologic studies, and personalized medicine strategies. This article summarizes the current state of the art in this field, including methodologic issues, available collections, practical applications, challenges and shortcomings, and future directions, and introduces a European consortium of PDX models. Significance: PDX models are increasingly used in translational cancer research. These models are useful for drug screening, biomarker development, and the preclinical evaluation of personalized medicine strategies. Abstract: This paper resumes the discussion in information systems research on the use of partial least squares (PLS) path modeling and shows that the inconsistency of PLS path coefficient estimates in the case of reflective measurement can have adverse consequences for hypothesis testing. To remedy this, the study introduces a vital extension of PLS: consistent PLS (PLSc). PLSc provides a correction for estimates when PLS is applied to reflective constructs: The path coefficients, inter-construct correlations, and indicator loadings become consistent. The outcome of a Monte Carlo simulation reveals that the bias of PLSc parameter estimates is comparable to that of covariance-based structural equation modeling. Moreover, the outcome shows that PLSc has advantages when using non-normally distributed data. We discuss the implications for IS research and provide guidelines for choosing among structural equation modeling techniques.

Abstract: The electronic structure of copper oxides has been investigated by photoelectron (x-ray photoemission, ultraviolet photoemission), Auger electron, and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopies. The experimental results are compared with one-electron band-structure calculations as well as with a cluster configuration interaction model. It is demonstrated that the results for ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$O agree well with band theory, whereas those for CuO clearly show strong deviations which we argue are due to electron-correlation effects in the open-shell $d$ bands. From the comparison to cluster calculations we extract values for the $\mathrm{Cu} d\ensuremath{-}d$ and $\mathrm{O} p\ensuremath{-}p$ Coulomb interactions, the O to Cu charge transfer energy, and the degree of $\mathrm{Cu} d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{O} 2p$ hybridization. From this we demonstrate that CuO is a charge-transfer gap insulator.
