TL;DR: A good understanding and smart engineering of the defects in MTP have been demonstrated to be a key factor for the fabrication of high-efficiency PSCs and progress on the state-of-the-art defect engineering approaches for the optimization of PSC devices is summarized.
Abstract: The rapid development of solar cells (SCs) based on organic–inorganic hybrid metal triiodide perovskite (MTP) materials holds great promise for next-generation photovoltaic devices. The demonstrated power conversion efficiency of the SCs based on MTP (PSCs for short) has reached over 20%. An MTP material is a kind of soft ionic solid semiconductor. The intrinsic optoelectronic properties of MTP are greatly determined by several factors, such as the crystalline phase, doping type, impurities, elemental composition, and defects in its crystal structure. In the development of PSCs, a good understanding and smart engineering of the defects in MTP have been demonstrated to be a key factor for the fabrication of high-efficiency PSCs. In this review, we start with a brief introduction to the types of defects and the mechanisms for their formation in MTP. Then, the positive and negative impacts of defects on the important optoelectronic features of MTP are presented. The optoelectronic properties mainly include charge recombination, charge transport, ion migration, and structural stability. Moreover, commonly used techniques for the characterization of the defects in MTP are systematically summarized. Recent progress on the state-of-the-art defect engineering approaches for the optimization of PSC devices is also summarized, and we also provide some perspectives on the development of high-efficiency PSCs with long-term stability through the optimization of the defects in MTP.

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed global model of atmospheric pressure He + H2O plasmas is presented, which incorporates 46 species and 577 reactions, based on simulation results obtained with this comprehensive model, the main species and reactions are identified, and simplified models capable of capturing the main physicochemical processes in He+H2O discharges are suggested.
Abstract: A detailed global model of atmospheric-pressure He + H2O plasmas is presented in this paper. The model incorporates 46 species and 577 reactions. Based on simulation results obtained with this comprehensive model, the main species and reactions are identified, and simplified models capable of capturing the main physicochemical processes in He + H2O discharges are suggested. The accuracy of the simplified models is quantified and assessed for changes in water concentration, input power and electrode configuration. Simplified models can reduce the number of reactions by a factor of similar to 10 while providing results that are within a factor of two of the detailed model. The simulation results indicate that Penning processes are the main ionization mechanism in this kind of discharge (1-3000 ppm of water), and water clusters of growing size are found to be the dominant charged species when the water concentration is above similar to 100 ppm. Simulation results also predict a growing electronegative character of the discharge with increasing water concentration. The use of He + H2O discharges for the generation of reactive oxygen species of interest in biomedical applications and the green production of hydrogen peroxide are also discussed. Although it would be unrealistic to draw conclusions regarding the efficacy of these processes from a zero-dimensional global model, the results indicate the potential suitability of He + H2O plasmas for these two applications.

TL;DR: The NiOx film, which was spin coated from presynthesized NiOx nanoparticles solution, can extract holes and block electrons efficiently, without any other post-treatments, in a flexible organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cell.
Abstract: A solution-derived NiOx film was employed as the hole contact of a flexible organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cell. The NiOx film, which was spin coated from presynthesized NiOx nanoparticles solution, can extract holes and block electrons efficiently, without any other post-treatments. An optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.47% was demonstrated in the NiOx-based perovskite solar cell on an ITO-glass substrate, which is much higher than that of the perovskite solar cells using high temperature-derived NiOx film contacts. The low-temperature deposition process made the NiOx films suitable for flexible devices. NiOx-based flexible perovskite solar cells were fabricated on ITO-PEN substrates, and a preliminary PCE of 13.43% was achieved.

TL;DR: Coral records show that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation may be less sensitive to past climate forcing than previously thought, and results suggest that forced changes in ENSO, whether natural or anthropogenic, may be difficult to detect against a background of large internal variability.
Abstract: The El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drives large changes in global climate patterns from year to year, yet its sensitivity to continued anthropogenic greenhouse forcing is uncertain. We analyzed fossil coral reconstructions of ENSO spanning the past 7000 years from the Northern Line Islands, located in the center of action for ENSO. The corals document highly variable ENSO activity, with no evidence for a systematic trend in ENSO variance, which is contrary to some models that exhibit a response to insolation forcing over this same period. Twentieth-century ENSO variance is significantly higher than average fossil coral ENSO variance but is not unprecedented. Our results suggest that forced changes in ENSO, whether natural or anthropogenic, may be difficult to detect against a background of large internal variability.
