Human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium in patients with age-related macular degeneration and Stargardt's macular dystrophy: follow-up of two open-label phase 1/2 studies

TLDR
The results suggest that hESC-derived cells could provide a potentially safe new source of cells for the treatment of various unmet medical disorders requiring tissue repair or replacement.

Survival of an HLA-mismatched, bioengineered RPE implant in dry age-related macular degeneration

TL;DR: In this article , the safety and preliminary efficacy of a subretinal implant consisting of a polarized monolayer of allogeneic human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells in subjects with geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to dry age-related macular degeneration was evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI

A strategy to ensure safety of stem cell- derived retinal pigment epithelium cells

TL;DR: A novel strategy for ensuring the absence of stem cells in the RPE population is presented and it is demonstrated that flow sorting on the basis of CD59 expression can effectively purify RPE and deplete stem cells, resulting in a population free from stem cell impurity.

Wogonin induces retinal neuron-like differentiation of bone marrow stem cells by inhibiting Notch-1 signaling.

TL;DR: Wogonin appears to promote retinal neuron-like differentiation of BMSCs by antagonizing the inhibitory actions of Notch-1 signaling on neurogenesis and may be useful in the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases.

Brain Organoids: Tiny Mirrors of Human Neurodevelopment and Neurological Disorders.

TL;DR: The contemporary state of brain organoids is presented with special emphasis on their mode of generation and their utility in modelling neurological disorders, drug discovery, and clinical trials.

Xeno-free and feeder-free culture and differentiation of human embryonic stem cells on recombinant vitronectin-grafted hydrogels

TL;DR: Hydrogels developed by adjusting surface charge of the hydrogels with grafting of poly-l-lysine for optimal culture of human embryonic stem cells differentiated into cardiomyocytes under xeno-free culture conditions with much higher efficiency than conventional recombinant vitronectin or Matrigel-coating dishes.

Induction of Pluripotent Stem Cells from Adult Human Fibroblasts by Defined Factors

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that iPS cells can be generated from adult human fibroblasts with the same four factors: Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc.

Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Derived from Human Blastocysts

TL;DR: Human blastocyst-derived, pluripotent cell lines are described that have normal karyotypes, express high levels of telomerase activity, and express cell surface markers that characterize primate embryonic stem cells but do not characterize other early lineages.
Journal ArticleDOI

Establishment in culture of pluripotential cells from mouse embryos

TL;DR: The establishment in tissue culture of pluripotent cell lines which have been isolated directly from in vitro cultures of mouse blastocysts are reported, able to differentiate either in vitro or after innoculation into a mouse as a tumour in vivo.

The Retinal Pigment Epithelium in Visual Function

TL;DR: This review summarizes the current knowledge of RPE functions and describes how failure of these functions causes loss of visual function.
