The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Cytotype Regulation of P Transposable Elements in Drosophila melanogaster: Repressor Polypeptides or piRNAs?

TL;DR: The telomeric P elements TP5 and TP6 are associated with the P cytotype, a maternally inherited condition that represses P-element-induced hybrid dysgenesis in the Drosophila germ line, and hobo transgenes carrying these elements were tested for expression of mRNA in the female germ line and for repression of hybrids.

Generalization Performance of Deep Learning Models in Neurodegenerative Disease Classification

TL;DR: The remarkable accuracies of the best performing models are questioned by assessing generalization performance of the state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) models on the classification of two most common neurodegenerative diseases, namely Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease using MRI.

Developmental regulation of hemoglobin synthesis in the green anole lizard Anolis carolinensis

TL;DR: In contrast to the pattern that has been documented in other tetrapod vertebrates, it appears that the developmental regulation of Hb synthesis in the green anole lizard does not involve discrete, stage-specific switches in gene activation and gene silencing.

Neural Crest Cell Survival is Dependent on Rho Kinase and is Required for Development of the Mid Face in Mouse Embryos

TL;DR: This study shows that conditional expression of a dominant-negative form of Rho kinase (Rock) in mouse NCC results in severe hypoplasia of the frontonasal processes and first pharyngeal arch, ultimately resulting in reduction of the maxilla and nasal bones and severe craniofacial clefting affecting the nose, palate and lip.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
