The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Decreased Lamina Cribrosa Beam Thickness and Pore Diameter Relative to Distance From the Central Retinal Vessel Trunk.

TL;DR: Results demonstrate the importance of considering the anatomical location of CRVT in the assessment of the LC, as there is a relationship between the distance from the CRVT and the LC microstructure, which differs between healthy and glaucoma eyes.

Fatigue Crack Growth of Electron Beam Melted Ti-6Al-4V in High-Pressure Hydrogen

TL;DR: The FCG test in hydrogen environment resulted in a drastic increase in crack growth rate at a certain ΔK, with crack propagation rates up to 13 times higher than those observed in air, and coarse microstructure was found to be more sensitive to HE.

The complexity of mating decisions in stalk-eyed flies.

TL;DR: The findings demonstrate the importance of assaying multiple traits in males and females, rather than focusing solely on prominent and exaggerated sexually dimorphic traits, to allow a more complete understanding of the complex mating decisions made by both males and Female.

Influence of air voids characteristics on the hydraulic conductivity of asphalt mixture

TL;DR: In this paper, the topological properties of air voids in asphalt mixture were analyzed using X-ray tomography scans and related to the hydraulic conductivity of a wide range of asphalt mixtures representative of those commonly used in practice.

Edge color distribution transform: an efficient tool for object detection in images

TL;DR: The paper proposes to detect objects in a new edge color distribution space (ECDS) rather than in the image space, where the edges of different objects are segregated and the spatial relation of a same object is kept as well, which make the object detection easier and less error-prone.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
