Image Processing

TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Perspectives on open access high resolution digital elevation models to produce global flood hazard layers

TL;DR: It is argued that although the availability of open access global terrain data has been critical in enabling the development of such models, the relatively poor resolution and precision of these data now limit significantly the authors' ability to estimate flood inundation and risk for the majority of the planet’s surface.

CUL1 regulates TOC1 protein stability in the Arabidopsis circadian clock.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that CUL1 is required for TOC1 degradation and suggested that this protein is the functional cullin for the SCF(ZTL) complex, and the contribution of CUL 1-containing SCF complexes to signaling within the plant oscillator is assessed.

Conical Electron Tomography of a Chemical Synapse: Polyhedral Cages Dock Vesicles to the Active Zone

TL;DR: The hypothesis that rat neocortical synapses are constructed of variable numbers of distinct synaptic units that facilitate the docking of vesicles to the active zone and determine the number of vESicles available for immediate release is supported.
