Image Processing

TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. A robust linear-parabolic model for lane following

TL;DR: This paper addresses the problem of lane detection and lane tracking by using a linear model to approximate lane boundaries in the first frame of a video sequence, using a combination of the edge distribution function and the Hough transform.

Ecological differentiation between sympatric pseudocryptic species in the estuarine benthic diatom Navicula phyllepta (Bacillariophyceae)

TL;DR: Estuarine populations of the widespread and common benthic diatom Navicula phyllepta Kütz consist of pseudocryptic species, showing different species with specialized ecophysiological characteristics rather than generalists with a broad adaptability to different environmental conditions.

Ocean acidification drives community shifts towards simplified non-calcified habitats in a subtropical−temperate transition zone

TL;DR: This work compared intertidal and subtidal marine communities at increasing levels of pCO2 at recently discovered volcanic seeps off the Pacific coast of Japan to provide the first assessment of ocean acidification effects at a biogeographic boundary.

Photosystem II Assembly and Repair Are Differentially Localized in Chlamydomonas

TL;DR: A novel chloroplast compartment is revealed that houses de novo PSII biogenesis and the regulated transport of newly assembled PSII complexes to thylakoid membranes throughout the chloropleft.

Alteration of the unfolded protein response modifies neurodegeneration in a mouse model of Marinesco–Sjögren syndrome

TL;DR: It is proposed that overexpression of HYOU1/ORP150, an exchange factor that works in parallel to SIL1, prevents ER stress and rescues neurodegeneration in Sil1−/− mice, whereas decreasing expression of H YOU1 exacerbates these phenotypes.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
