Image Processing

TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. EGF-mediated reduced miR-92a-1-5p controls HTR-8/SVneo cell invasion through activation of MAPK8 and FAS which in turn increase MMP-2/-9 expression

TL;DR: EGF leads to reduced miR-92a-1-5p expression which may be regulated by STAT1/STAT3 and controls HTR-8/SVneo cells invasion by targeting MAPK8 and FAS, which in turn increases MMP-2/MMP-9 expression.

Distinct N-terminal regions of the exomer secretory vesicle cargo Chs3 regulate its trafficking itinerary

TL;DR: It is shown that different segments of the Chs3 N-terminus mediate distinct trafficking steps, suggesting different cargo adaptors could compete for binding to this segment, providing a potential mechanism for regulation.

Pollen classification of three types of plants of the family Urticaceae

TL;DR: An automatic approach based on shape analysis to classify three types of pollen of the Urticaceae family is described and a statistical evaluation of the first experiments is provided.

A practical local tomography reconstruction algorithm based on a known sub-region

TL;DR: This method uses an initial reconstruction and refines it by correcting the low-frequency artifacts, known as the cupping effect, and yields an unbiased reconstruction, in accordance with uniqueness theorems stated in local tomography.

Detection of Pulmonary Nodules from CT Scans

TL;DR: A computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to detect small-size pulmonary nodules from helical CT scans to help lower the number of omissions and to decrease the time needed to examine the scan by a radiologist.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
