Image Processing

TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Evolution of decoration in majoid crabs: a comparative phylogenetic analysis of the role of body size and alternative defensive strategies.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the costs of hook production and decoration maintenance and/or the lowered adaptive value of camouflage for larger species may limit the evolutionary distribution of decoration camouflage among the majoids.

Jenufa gen. nov.: a new genus of coccoid green algae (chlorophyceae, incertae sedis) previously recorded by environmental sequencing(1)

TL;DR: Two almost identical environmental 18S rDNA sequences from an endolithic microbial community occurring in dolomite rock in the central Alps turned out to be specifically related to, yet apparently distinct from, the sequence of J. minuta, indicating the existence of an undescribed Jenufa species occurring in the temperate zone.

Bridge damage detection using spatiotemporal patterns extracted from dense sensor network

TL;DR: A spatiotemporal pattern network (STPN) strategy built on symbolic dynamic filtering (SDF) is proposed to explore spatiotmporal behaviors in a bridge network and demonstrates increased sensitivity in detecting damages and higher reliability in quantifying the damage level with increase in sensor network density.

Adaptive hybrid mean and median filtering of high-ISO long-exposure sensor noise for digital photography

TL;DR: A new adaptive center-weighted hybrid mean and median filter is formulated and used within a novel optimal-size windowing framework to reduce the effects of two types of sensor noise, namely blue-channel noise and JPEG blocking artifacts, common in high-ISO digital camera images.
