TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.Abstract:
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Hybrid pixel-based data hiding and block-based watermarking for error-diffused halftone images
Soo-Chang Pei,Jing-Ming Guo +1 more
TL;DR: A kernels-alternated error diffusion (KAEDF) technique is proposed for embedding watermarks into error-diffused images, and the correct decoding rates for both techniques are high and extremely robust, even after printing and scanning processes.

Parallel and nonparallel ecological, morphological and genetic divergence in lake-stream stickleback from a single catchment.
TL;DR: Lake–stream stickleback divergence in Lough Neagh provides evidence for the deterministic role of selection and supports the hypothesis that parallel selection in similar environments may initiate parallel speciation.

A neuropeptide hormone cascade controls the precise onset of post-eclosion cuticular tanning in Drosophila melanogaster.
TL;DR: It is concluded that the ecdysis hormone cascade acts as a regulatory switch to control the precise onset of tanning by both translational and activational control of TH.

TL;DR: This study highlights the importance of high-resolution phenotyping to characterize cellular structure in inherited retinal disease; such information will be critical for selecting patients most likely to respond to therapeutic intervention and for establishing a baseline for evaluating treatment efficacy.

Characterization of Arabidopsis NEET Reveals an Ancient Role for NEET Proteins in Iron Metabolism
Rachel Nechushtai,Andrea R. Conlan,Yael Harir,Luhua Song,Ohad Yogev,Yael Eisenberg-Domovich,Oded Livnah,Dorit Michaeli,Rachel Rosen,Vincent Ma,Yuting Luo,John A. Zuris,Mark L. Paddock,Zvi Ioav Cabantchik,Patricia A. Jennings,Ron Mittler,Ron Mittler +16 more
TL;DR: It is found that At-NEET plays a key role in plant development, senescence, reactive oxygen species homeostasis, and iron metabolism, and the hypothesis that NEET proteins have an ancient role in cells associated with Fe metabolism is supported.
